The hero, unless he is actually more powerful, is not going to win on those terms.
However, speaking from personal experience, very smart people tend to have two huge, seemingly unrelated weaknesses: Obsessiveness and distractability. If your hero is merely less intelligent than his opponent - which is quite different from being of average intellect per se - then I can easily see him taking advantage of this in some way.
