I like Super Paper Mario, but after the flaming shitheap atrocity that was Sticker Star we could really use a return to the classic style, not Sticker Star 2.
I mean, yeah, it's possible that the footage is just from before you have any partners, and that the battle system shown is just a small gimmick within a more normal battle system, but after Sticker Star you'd think they'd want to showcase "Hey, look, we fixed it" rather than "Here's more of the same stuff you hated."
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!A lot of people can't accept that Super was the best.
Honestly, Paper Mario wasn't going to and probably never will return to its roots. At least not the roots fans want. Because its roots aren't really as a turn-based RPG, but as a wacky experiment to do new and creative things with a paper version of Mario. It's a case where the developers and fanbase want completely different things.
Not sure why they based this off SS based on that explanation though. I'm willing to bet it's rushed though. And on paper it isn't repeating all of SS's sins, with a new location and a mystery bad guy. I doubt any of the locales will be that interesting, and it'll probably end up as another one of Bowser's schemes, but the premise has a little more meat to it.
I don't buy that for a second. TTYD was quite clearly a traditional sequel to PM 64, fixing flaws, expanding the concept, building off a foundation that was already there. SPM was an experiment, but it still held to the PM roots, with the aesthetics, a goofy Bowser, and lots of nods and mechanics that called back to the first two.
Sticker Star was Nintendo saying "THIS is Paper Mario now. Any objections, Lady?" And then they cemented it in with every game since drawing from it and ONLY it, like it was some sort of holy text. And I. Don't. Like. That.
Click for more crappy pixel artum I think I'd like to get the new paper mario game
is that ok
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectOf course it's okay. Why wouldn't it be? Don't let other people tell you what you can and can't enjoy.
Personally, I'm not going to judge the new Paper Mario game yet. I haven't seen enough of it to get a good idea of what it's like, and I've learned the hard way that judging based solely on first impressions can bite me in the ass really hard. I'm going to wait and see what else they reveal.

Well, I mean, by the wailing and gnashing of teeth I'm hearing, I feel like being interested in it makes me an objectively bad person who is killing Paper Mario games.

Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectI'm really, really glad that Paper Mario wasn't a part of my childhood. Now I can enjoy a calm sense of indifference when a new game gets announced.
I didn't play any of the Paper Mario games until a couple years ago, and I still thought Sticker Star was really bland and mediocre.
I've got Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash, Spyro, and Paper Mario fanfics.Yeah, well, I wasn't saying Sticker Star was great. I enjoyed it enough to play it, just not enough to finish it.
All I'm saying is that we've barely got a consecutive minute of footage for Color Splash yet, and everybody's having a hissy fit about it. Sure, it won't be as good as TTYD, but that's because TTYD was, as far as I can tell, a nearly flawless sequel. Trying to perfect the formula any more and things probably would get a bit samey.
It doesn't look like New Super Mario Bros. RPG anymore, and that's good. It still looks like Sticker Star (overworld map means short "levels" with goal points means exploration is almost nil, can only attack using consumable items meaning there's no point in fighting most non-boss enemies), and that's bad.
If Bowser ends up with no dialogue again I'm going to punch something.
pearlina brainrot affects millions of people worldwide. if you or a loved one are suffering from pearlina brainrot, call 1-800-GAY-NERDSI think it'll be likely that they'll at least fix that. Take away Bowser's hammy personality and he's just kind of boring. They did fix that in Paper Jam, so I wouldn't think they'd go back to voiceless Bowser again after that.
"Pardon me, that extremely loud and extremely deep voice you may have just heard. It was me. Oh, it is such a long story..."Yes, but the thing is, Alpha Dream is not Intelligent Systems. Shigeru Miyamoto (responsible for most of the things that made Sticker Star not-good) has much closer ties to the latter than the former, considering they're the ones who make Nintendo's hardware and everything, so the game is much more likely to turn out how he wants it to, i.e. more like Sticker Star than Thousand-Year Door. Even with the apparent fallout of Sticker Star hanging over their heads (hence the lack of new characters), Alpha Dream was still able to put out an entertaining game in the form of Paper Jam - and more importantly proved that it was still possible to make Bowser a legitimately menacing villain without shutting him up. But Miyamoto's involvement with Paper Jam was most likely limited to signing off on it as a producer, maybe a no-new-characters mandate too. Color Splash is more likely to have mute Bowser than not.
I don't like to judge things without having tried them, but I'll make an exception here: Sticker Star wasn't a good game, even on its own merits, and with Color Splash it looks like IS hasn't learned a damn thing. Adding more mechanics to boring gameplay and useless encounters does not make it better. Pass.

it doesn't make me feel particularly strongly one way or the other. i never ended up playing sticker star either but from the sounds of it, they took away most of the things that made paper mario good and interesting in the first place.
It had a fairly ambitious and honestly relatively decent and impressive story for a Mario game, and the music was awright but the "platforming rpg" gameplay was boring and awkward imho. All the partners being geometric shapes with basically no role in the plot also made them really boring and forgettable imho.

No new characters in Paper was apparently an Alpha Dream decision, to keep things simple.
It wasn't awkward really, it was just too basic. They didn't do anything interesting.

YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.My only complait with SPM was that it was way too easy.
I mean, the Paper Mario games aren't exactly Battletoads to begin with, but SPM I could beat with my eyes closed and all of my fingers broken by the yakuza, who broke my fingers because they're secretly controlling IS and making them only produce shitty Paper Mario sequels as punishment for when their CEO spilt coffee on the yakuza boss's best suit, and I tried to tell you guys over the internet but then they found me and broke my fingers as a warning.
That's how easy a game it is.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! But you got your fingers broken twice for that.
I guess "barebones or halfbaked" might be a better term. It was really easy and felt very lacking.
The Paper Mario games were never hard honestly but I felt like the multiple partner options lent the game at least some pretense of depth. Either way, I definitely preferred them to the gameplay in SPM.
Nintendo: You're get nothing but Sticker Star and like it look at the Metroid fans!!!
Mileena MadnessThis is getting annoying guys
Yeah, Nintendo continuing to publish Sticker Star-inspired games IS annoying.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!People expressing their opinions on a game that doesn't look good at all sure is annoying.
pearlina brainrot affects millions of people worldwide. if you or a loved one are suffering from pearlina brainrot, call 1-800-GAY-NERDSHe's got a point the more people complain the more they will add Sticker Star elements into the Paper Mario games. :V
Mileena MadnessIf I remember right, Miyamoto said he wanted Sticker Star to be the "template" that all future Paper Mario games follow.
Meaning that unless that ever changes, we're better off just abandoning the series until he or IS gets the hint.

Super isn't bad, it's just that it being huge departure from the previous games was (and still is) pretty jarring.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?
