I've just happened upon the game while wandering the web in boredom in search of some MMO to latch onto, I found Battleswarm, a little known MMO released in 2009.
It's a TPS/FPS and RTS combined, in that human space marines play the TPS/FPS part, holding off a player controlled zerg-like swarm of bugs from the RTS part of the game.
For the humans, it carries qualities of Starship Troopers, a small group holding off a much larger, and ever continuous swarm of bugs, with generic human weaponry.
For the bugs, players of this faction experience a Starcraft like interface, building structures is omitted. Bugs endlessly pour out of spawn points (can pick what bug the spawn point produces) and the player directs where they go. A good bug player can overwhelm a group of player space marines :P
Sound interesting?
From my initial gameplay, I found it fun. I didn't see any glaring flaws that would deserve the current low player population. So, does this game need more love?

Could use some speculation as to the low player population. I blame it on lack of advertisement, the game isn't really featured in much places online.
