(not sure this is the right forum)

Why is that people are scared of it? If it is true, than you wouldn't even be able to feel anything at all. If you can't perceive it, what's the problem?

I've been existing for as long as I can remember.

To suddenly not is a scary thing, even if I won't actually feel it.

Because after you die, then you won't feel anything at all?

I mean, even to Atheists, this idea is very scary.

If you're not frightened by this concept....you're lying.

Or you're the bravest man ever.

Everyone is scared of death, except for the few lucky freaks who were born with no fear of death and suicidal people.

Fear of death is something just instinctive to humans. It takes a lot to override that.

Not existing after dying would be worse than burning in hell.

How I feel about the subject changes over time. That said, I'm not always afraid of it.

Our brains have actually evolved to prevent us from fully comprehending the idea that we'll ever not exist. It's why we so readily believe in an afterlife or soul of some sort...it's a defense mechanism so we don't live in a constant panic.

Studies have shown even people who firmly believe in the finality of death still subconsciously feel like they'll always exist. Everybody does. It's genetic.

Of course the notion of anything after death is quite silly. We are nothing but conglomerates of cells. Our thoughts and feelings and memories are JUST a bunch of specialized cells in constant communication with each other. When they die, they stop communicating. Consciousness isn't a "thing" that "goes" somewhere...it's a process that stops happening. It's a conversation coming to an end. A hard drive burning out.

Basically we're all doomed until God pops into existence for no reason at all, resurrects the dead, and ushers in an era of perfect justice.

Or is it just going to be me and Aaron Diaz swapping packets?

I haven't existed for billions of years. I've spent more time not existing than existing. The nothingness after death is exactly as scary as the nothingness before birth.

I don't get the whole "Hell would be better than nonexistance" idea. To paraphrase one youtuber, any prolonged time, let alone an eternity spent in infinite torment would drive most individuals irretrievably insane. What you once knew as "you" would not only not exist in the present, but would probably be forgotten entirely before long.

Whether or not I'm genuinely afraid of the concept varies over time, but suffice to say that it's still a bit weird for me to try to wrap my mind around at a deeper level, as silly as it sounds.

...And now here I am, sitting and thinking about it again. Hm. Hmm.

I suppose it could be argued that being sentient gives one the ability to be afraid of the possibility of not existing, but it could also be argued that after death one will no longer have the capacity to care. Then again, that's probably why some people are afraid of death.

I am not frightened by the state of death, but the last few minutes of life in which my consciousness fade away and I feel my last emotion.

I'm really, really big on death being a bittersweet, comfortable thing with friends and family by your side, and your opportunity to give your will and say last words. I'm extremely frightened of any sudden death where I'm frightened and don't know what's going on. I just don't want to go out that way. I don't want to fade out to fear.

Banned entirely for telling FE that he was being rude and not contributing to the discussion. I shall watch down from the goon heavens.
