First thing's first: KEEP. THIS. SHIT. CIVIL. If you can't talk about race without resorting to childish insults and rude generalizations or getting angry at people who don't see it your way, leave the thread.
With that said, I bring you to what can hopefully be the general thread about race.
First, a few starter questions.
- How, if at all, do you feel your race affects your everyday life?
- Do you believe that white people (or whatever the majority race in your area is) receive privileges simply because of the color of their skin. How much?
- Do you believe minorities are discriminated against for the same reason? How much?
- Do you believe that assimilation of cultures is better than people trying to keep their own?
- Affirmative Action. Yea, Nay? Why or why not?
Also, a personal question from me.
- Why (in my experience, not trying to generalize) do white people often try to insist that they aren't white? I can't count the number of times I've heard "I'm not white, I'm 1/4th English, 1/4th German, 1/4th Scandinavian 1/8th Cherokee, and 1/8th Russian," as though 4 of 5 of those things aren't considered "white" by the masses. Is it because you have pride for your ancestry, or an attempt to try and differentiate yourself from all those "other" white people? Or something else altogether?

If you ever run into one of those neo-Confederate types pretending that the Civil War wasn't about slavery, your ammo box of historical counterevidence can be found here.
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.Oh Jesus Mary and Joseph grant me strength...
I am working with a black man who just said slavery wasn't about color...
Among other racist and bigoted things...
Yep, he just said he doesnt consider himself black. That's it Gabrael, just shut up and let it go.
"Psssh. Even if you could catch a miracle on a picture any person would probably delete it to make space for more porn." - AszurDepends what you mean about "It wasn't about slavery".
Was slavery THE Issue? Yes. Without disagreement about slavery, whole thing would have (most likely) never happened.
Was it the only issue? Well, depends. There is matter of state rights and few other things.
Did these other things matter as much as slavery? Not really, most of them tied back to "right" to hold slaves, rather than being their own issues.
Well, Texas was very adamant about it being all about 'white people good, black people bad'. And then there's the Cornerstone Speech...
What's precedent ever done for us?Slavery was the root from which the whole thing sprang. You're correct in saying it wasn't the only reason - to claim that would be to commit the fallacy of the single cause - but without slavery an American Civil War would have been considerably more unlikely, and many of the other issues tied neatly into the question of slavery.
A good example is another North/South divide: over the question of whether to try and poach Spain's colonial possessions in Central America. North said no, South said yes. Why? Because the Southerners wanted America to add thousands of new slave-holding citizens to try and overcome their comparative disadvantage in numbers compared to the North.
Schild und Schwert der ParteiHe said making black people slaves wasn't about them being black or racial superiority because if it was, then the white people both male and female wouldn't have had sex with the African slaves.
He also tried to explain he had a right to slap his wife should she make him angry enough and if women leave it is gaurenteed they are "contaminated" because they will immediately have sex with more men.
Those are the highlights. He also tried to explain his views that gays are only such because they were abused as children or taught that because "no child has an original thought until maybe 13 and even then they aren't really theirs."
"Psssh. Even if you could catch a miracle on a picture any person would probably delete it to make space for more porn." - AszurChannelling Soweto and Uganda. Charming. <_<
If he comes out with the "there is no such thing as marital rape" suggestion, remind him of a very old African phrase: "a raped woman makes a thorny wife".
And, yes: the inference was that that included marital rape. I seriously hate those views being parroted by black blokes. Way to be a tool for the Evangelists. <_<

Oh he said women needed to give it to their husbands regardless of their feelings or else the men have a right to go elsewhere...
I asked him twice if he was really American.

Jesus, how old is this guy? He reminds me of a line from Chris Rock's stand-up. Look at him like a betamax, they still make you?
Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand!23, with a 2 and 3 year old from his wife of two years (she is 20, works full time and is a full time nursing student at a really good school here).
The guy has a 7 year old son from a previous relationship.
I am hoping that the woman who seems to have her shit together is just making it through so that as soon as she graduates she can take her kids and ditch this asshole.
"Psssh. Even if you could catch a miracle on a picture any person would probably delete it to make space for more porn." - AszurThat's seems.... harsh.
Edit: oh I didn't see he was pro wife beating. Yeah fuck that guy.

hashtagsarestupidJust yesterday in my area some guy apparently grabbed his gun and attempted to kill a 16yr old black girl while shouting that he was "gonna kill him some niggers." From what I've heard he fired off some shots at her while she was near her garage then chased her into her house and fired through the door she locked herself behind.
The charges? Resisting arrest and unlawful discharge of a firearm, with a $20,000 bail that was immediately paid.

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Since the fellow is already back at his house, the girl in question is staying with friends. When he was initially charged in court he was laughing his ass off when they read the charges according to some witnesses. His defense is arguing that he shouldn't face any prison time because he's 74 years old, ergo "any time would be a life sentence to him." Never mind that he'd tried to kill someone. . .
Knowing my community, he's probably a friend of the local sheriff or a donator.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.In the SynchTube Troper Coven, where we watch strange movies and riff on them live, MST 3 K style (see my sig), we just watched an odd movie called "Space is the Place", starring a black musician named Sun Ra. The movie is about a black guy who travels the universe and then decides to settle a planet entirely for black people. Yes, segregation IN SPACE!
When was that movie made?

Man, they picked a really unfortunate picture for the Ben Carson factoid.
