First thing's first: KEEP. THIS. SHIT. CIVIL. If you can't talk about race without resorting to childish insults and rude generalizations or getting angry at people who don't see it your way, leave the thread.

With that said, I bring you to what can hopefully be the general thread about race.

First, a few starter questions.

  • How, if at all, do you feel your race affects your everyday life?
  • Do you believe that white people (or whatever the majority race in your area is) receive privileges simply because of the color of their skin. How much?
    • Do you believe minorities are discriminated against for the same reason? How much?
  • Do you believe that assimilation of cultures is better than people trying to keep their own?
  • Affirmative Action. Yea, Nay? Why or why not?

Also, a personal question from me.

  • Why (in my experience, not trying to generalize) do white people often try to insist that they aren't white? I can't count the number of times I've heard "I'm not white, I'm 1/4th English, 1/4th German, 1/4th Scandinavian 1/8th Cherokee, and 1/8th Russian," as though 4 of 5 of those things aren't considered "white" by the masses. Is it because you have pride for your ancestry, or an attempt to try and differentiate yourself from all those "other" white people? Or something else altogether?

Maybe they couldn't? I mean they seem to have been stuck in a time warp back to a time when this was acceptable, so all the hospitals were probably whites only.

I've learned never to assume good faith when it comes to race issues here in the south. I haven't been proven wrong yet.

Most of the religious things actually tie into either homophobia or racism. Doubly so on the racism when it comes to Islamophobia.

Like if you put someone who was pale and Muslim in front of them, like say someone from Bosnia, they'd never assume they weren't Christian.

[up]In many cases is the asumption christinaity is "White" to counter Islam who is "Middle eastern" that is why when politics in US talk about christian percecution is more of "they force to acept gay here!" and not christian people being hunted by ISIS or other other countries

White = Christian = Good

Brown = Muslim = Bad

Nevermind the fact that there are numerous white Muslims all across Eastern Europe and that unless I'm mistaken most Christians these days are from Africa and South America.

Which is kinda funny, since Latin Catholics tend to be quite conservative and usually agree with the Go P in things like Abortion and LGBT rights but due to the anti-immigration and racist stances the Latins in the US usually end up flocking to the Dems over being afraid of being deported or losing their jobs.

Do you not tend to also get hatred for people of the 'wrong' denomination of Christanity? The same way you get hatred for Catholics I doubt Anglicans (with their gay bishops) are very welcome, in fact I doubt anyone who isn't either a Baptist or a non-denominational Evangelical is.

You used to get a lot of hate for Catholics but really the religious tones in general have died down a lot in favor of white nationalism and neo-confederates. Trump's effectively pushed all the bible thumpers out in favor of neo nazis and facists now.

There's some holdouts of course but that particular brand of hate isn't in vogue anymore.

I find it interesting, JFK being Catholic was considered something of a novelty wasn't it? How much of the Irish discrimination was based on inter-denomination bigotry?

I do remember there being some rather serious concern that JFK would be subservient to the Pope and hand over control of the US to the Vatican once elected.

Novelty isn't quite the word I would use.

Here in latin amercia that is not a issue, well there is clash between evangelicas and catolics(more prevalent in Mexico and Brazil for what I remenber) and of course that general distaste of everything non christian as black magic

More like a silly concern. But then again, it doesn't come to me as a surprise, considering cartoons such as this.

I recall the whole "papists infiltrating the country and selling it to the Russians" was a popular line in Klan newspapers along with your general racism and Red Scare bullshit circa 60's-70's. Makes me wish I still had them, there were some pretty spot-on similarities between a lot of the rubbish in them and the rhetoric coming from Trump's lot nowadays.
