Well I just started playing Metal Gear Solid 2 for the 1st time, jumping around the various games in the series takes some getting used to. My muscle memory is going to hell.

Luckily the insanity later in the game shouldn't be a problem for me. Hopefully.

[up]Hope you enjoy it, I picked up a copy of MGS 2 that came in the PS 2 trilogy set because my original copy didn't work and...this copy doesn't work either.

As far as Metal Gear Solid 3 goes, I was really blown away by The End. The Pain and The Fear were nothing spectacular, in my opinion: really, the bosses had been slightly degrading in quality from MGS 1 (or so I felt). The Fear reminded me too much of Vamp.

Anyways, just beat The End for the first time, probably took around two hours total to kill him nonlethally and get his suit. This was primarily because I did not realize that there were three whole areas he was sniping in, so I was running around the first trying to figure out where that waterfall my Codec team mentioned was. This is why they will not be asking me to do any real-life spec ops missions.

But in all seriousness, as far as a boss goes, it was a brilliant idea. I mean, holy crap, there are at least three different ways to kill this guy, not even in terms of take-down strategies. You can snipe him when you see him in the wheelchair, set your freakin' console's clock forward and have him die of old age, or defeat him normally. Sniper Wolf's sniper fight was good, but this redefined it. Whereas the Sniper Wolf fight was more a contest of marksmanship and reflexes, this felt more like the "scout" aspect of a "scout sniper". Crawling across the ground, trying to look for a glint of light from a scope or scanning the landscape. Next time will be easier, as I know the tactics to defeat him, but still, this was really unexpected. I've yet to see a sniping portion of a game done this well.

And if only I could wear his camo and the Fear's camo simultaenously...

[up] I ended up skipping the console's clock forward to beat him. I wish there was some kind of shortcut like that for the Fear, because he's really annoying (leaping around trees mostly invisible when you can't even see him to aim with the awful camera).

Yeah, the End tends to have a very strong Love it or Hate it reaction with folks. Personally I loved the fight for the very same reasons you listed, but I never managed to get him shake down his camo; he'd keep fighting back or detecting me every time I got close.

I think you'll like the boss coming up next. He's real easy to beat, but the way the flame spreads, illuminates the area, and makes it harder for you to stay hidden make it a fun battle.

You guys know you can throw out rotten food and the Fear will eat it, stamina killing himself right?

Thanks man, I'm sure I will. Sorry to hear about your copy. I got mine with the HD collection for the PS 3.

[up][up]Problem is, he immediately runs away and hides as soon as he eats it, and he can quickly replenish his stamina as well by eating some unpoisoned food in the area. It's that single issue that makes him so damn annoying to score a nonlethal KO against.

Finally found a working copy of MGS 2, now I can see the second half of this game.

I really didn't have any trouble with The Fear. I used the infrared goggles to locate him, and after he eats the spoiled food he spends a few moments throwing up, allowing you to plug him. Plus his camo naturally drains his own stamina, so as long as you have enough tranquilizer ammo you should be fine.

[up] There are infrared goggles? I... haven't really used gadgets at all. I basically just hide in the grass and tranq people from a distance or take them out with CQC.

Yep, there are infrareds. I forget where I found them (it's been so long)...

I've been playing Silent Hill a lot lately, and a weird thought crossed my mind: "Silent Hill would be a lot better if it played like Metal Gear Solid." Doncha think?

What I mean basically is that I think incorporating stealth elements would make the games a little more immersive. To an extent SH 1 does (running or—in dark areas—walking around with the light on will cause enemies to come after you) but I think it could be taken a step farther.

Mostly this idea came to me because I found one of the most creepy moments in a video game to me that part in MGS 1 where you enter a hallway and all the guards are inexplicably dead.

Wouldn't really work for Silent Hill. Part of the fear is how completely useless you are at protecting yourself, and how vulnerable you are. Stealth games like MGS are more about hunting people then hiding.

Besides, the protagonists of Silent Hill are normal people, they wouldn't have any idea how to stealth properly.

We had a soldier as a protagonist once. It was terrible. Homecoming is the absolute worst entry in the series and we should do everything we can to avoid it. Other then that the series has plenty of variety, but anyone with more then a cop's level of training is too far.

You don't always need military training to hide from people. Using stealth 'properly' is a very different thing when dealing with questionably-sentient humanoid abominations, rather than Genome soldiers. If anything, what's being proposed is a more advanced version of 'running away.'

Again, we already do that though. Some entries don't even have combat, all of them try to keep you from fighting at all.

[up][up][up]Anybody calling Silent Hill: Homecoming "terrible" is engaging in hyperbole, that game was average. The problem with it is it wanted to focus more on fighting, but the devs were probably too scared *

to make the character a competent fighter for it to work as well as it should have.

I haven't played it *

, but Downpour seems like it could've had a heavy focus on sneaking and have the prisoner character hiding from monster cop things or something.

We should probably move the conversation to the Silent Hill thread, it could probably use a good bump anyway.

The Fear has an even easier method than using the poisoned food:

Step 1: Have a stun grenade and an AK-47 with ammo.

Step 2: Set the AK-47 to auto-fire.

Step 3: Begin fight with The Fear.

Step 4: Use a Fake-Death Pill.

Step 5: Wait for The Fear to check your body and turn around, and then use the Revive Pill.

Step 6: Stay behind The Fear, and throw the stun grenade out in front of him.

Step 7: After the grenade goes off, aim the AK-47 at The Fear's head, fire, and get cheap-ass tranq-kill.

[up] I've never used the Fake Death pills, hahaha, that's brilliant.

Just got into the mountains. That ladder-climb was just ridiculous.
