If you could make porn out of kids in a sporting event, you could do it with just pictures of them sitting around in a Mc Donalds...

I think children at my school took home to be signed a form that basically said "The school and people associated with the school are allowed to photograph my children".

Still...the worst incident is the one in the Arizona Walmart.

I think Walmart did that just to get some publicity.

Given that the parents themselves aren't allowed to take pictures in certain circumstances, I don't think their permission means much at all.

18 is ridiculously high. On most US States, it's 16. On most European countries, it's 14-16.

Ages of consent higher than 16 are the standard in backwards, overly religious, puritanical countries.

Meh... 18 doesn't strike me as ridiculously high. That's about the age you finish high school and are more or less considered an adult by society *

. 14 and 15 seem pretty low to me. That's... what, Freshman and Sophomore year? Maybe old enough to legally consent to someone your own age, but not a grown-ass man/woman. 16-17 is probably the lowest I'd feel comfortable lowering it, and even 16 seems a bit too young for that to me.

Of course, how much of that I owe to the culture I was raised in is up for grabs, but for reference the age of consent is 17 here in Louisiana.

Ages of consent should be based on the ages when teens do become sexually active out of their own volition, not on when the Moral Guardians think they should.

14 is low, but if that's the age average kids start screwing around (and in many places, it is) it's the appropriate Ao C.

In my opinion, it should be 15 or 16.

The main problem with these laws is that...what's the difference between a 16 and 17 year old? A 17 and 18? A 18 and 19? And not to mention...the fact that it's different all over the world just makes the whole thing more complicated.

The laws feel so...fake and tacked on for the sake of Moral Guardians. Yet you know that they exist so that 80 year old pensises don't find their way into 1 year old babies...

The result is a law that no one likes, but we must have, but are incapable of deciding a right number.

^ Teenagers don't care about the law anyways...and some even did it when they're 13...or 14. The best age is...16 for western countries I guess.

What's the legal age for driving?

Whatever the age is, the Age of Consent for sex should never be as high or higher. Use the legal age for driving as a indicator I guess.

[up] It's never right to criminalize consensual conduct. And deciding that teenagers are not capable of giving consent (notwithstanding that they do it all the time) is a Bad Thing.

Too late.

Funny thing is. The more taboo you make something, the more people just want to do them.

@Signed- The legal age for driving varies by state— here, you can get a license at 16 with certain restrictions on it, or wait till 18. As far as the differences between the ages, you get a fair bit of maturity and brain development in those years. Some more than others. 18's just generally accepted as "old enough to know that you want to have sex"

@Savage Heathen- I can see where you're coming from, but I'm more of the opinion that just because they want to doesn't mean they should or that it should be allowed. Also, for the sake of people other than the people involved. Hypothetical situation- Someone posts nude photos of a 15 year old girl on the internet. How do we know if she gave consent or if there's something else going on there? Easier to just say "Hell no, take that shit down, someone's going to jail."

State by state age laws suck...how can something as important and potentially life-threatening vary from state by state*

?

I wonder how much of this have their roots in religion?

Nowadays, teenagers start with seriously promiscous behaviour already in their early teens. The first menstruation also comes much earlier than in the past. There are many proofs that it is linked with the change in eating habits and food content. It is something irreversible - if teens become sexually mature and feel sex drive earlier than their counterparts from the past, why should we cling to outdated laws? Age of consent should be lowered to 15.

In Poland, age of consent is 15 IIRC. Not a bad, although I'd say 14 is better. Also, I think there should be a law that says that if the age difference is small, it shouldn't be punished - nowadays it's legal for a 14 years old guy to have sex with a 13 years old girl but when this guy turns 15 and the girl turns 14 it's automatically seen as child abuse. Where's the logic behind it?

Yes, that issue should also be regulated - it's completely ridiculous.

In Victoria, the age of consent is dependent upon the ages of the people involved. So a 14 year old having sex with a 16 year old is cool, but a 30 year old having sex with a 17 year old is definitely NOT cool. Seems pretty reasonable.

Sounds nice...but many people have relationships that go up to 4 years apart. Heck, most people have parents that are more than 5 years apart.

So what if the couple is 14 and 17*

?

^^^ If the age difference is more than 2 years, it is illegal unless you are 16 or older, which is the general age of consent for the whole country. So if a 17 year old had sex with a 14 year old, that would be against the law.

I know that some relationships will be between people with a greater difference in age, but the line has to be drawn somewhere.

^^ At 16 or older, the age difference rule doesn't apply.

^ Oops, you're right. At 16 or older, it's all fair game. Some states have some more specific laws, like the age difference thing I mentioned, but the general age of consent for the whole country is 16.

Edit: I explained it somewhat poorly, so here is a link.

[up]It seems pretty reasonable. Doesn't fall into stupidity like punishing two consenting teens or punishing adults with a big age difference between them while still prohibitting child molestation. More consent laws should be like this
