I usually use the original Arabic words for religious terms. I will take up the offer if the situation demands it though.smile

I'm Muslim Troper once known as Masonicon, my Troper Work are The Ultimate Crossover Movie.

Bonus point that I'm Conspiracy Theorist that thinks very differently from most people in T Vtropes and unlike most other Conspiracy Theorists, I'm more open minded and less Paranoid, at least for a Conspiracy Theorist

I may have an oppertunity to teach a seminar on Postmodern Islam this fall. Is there a certain topic, personality, or what not you guys would appreciate covered? The time period is between 1980 to present, no limit on what cultural group or sect. Of course the Middle East and Southeast Asia are the big ones, but I want to spend some time on Serbia as well.

I will ask if you can be specific with your directions. For example instead of just plain marriage, a marriage between a Sunni and a Shia, or the changing marriage customs of Muslims in the Punjab region, something a little more in focus.

I don't know how wide or narrow the scope, so these may be too wide or narrow.

  • What sharia and jihad really is.
  • Polygamy by Muslims today, is it really the local culture or the religion that gives the most influence.
  • Female genital mutilation and honour killing. Is it the local pre-Islamic culture or part of the religion.
  • Islamic finance today.
  • Ifrah Ahmed.

Actually those are wonderful topics! I am so tired of teaching the same old things over and over. It's great to finally be given free reign to pick anything I want now. The problem is so much freedom I don't know where to start!

I highly doubt it's "PC" bullshit, considering it's not politically correct in the slightest, and it DOES happen in places, but it's not a part of islam.

The more people about it the better. Considering that my country's fatwa council actually banned FGM.

I have a question, Blurring...How comparable to Malaysia to Indonesia in terms of religious tolerance, like in cases such as this? Both are majority Muslim south-east Asian countries in close geographical proximity, so I'm interested in similarities and differences between the two in this regard.

I don't know much about Indonesia, and I rather not trust what the media say about the country. 61.3% of the populace is Muslim (page 9) . I think the percentage is higher in Indonesia. I have to admit we do have problems but I'm very sure we are not killing each other right now. I can't really talk about law because that is something I'm not familiar with. Personally however, I support my Government's stand of outlawing any attack on any religion.

Yay? A Muslim colleague of mine was bemoaning that Ramadan starts soon, because it'll be a lot more difficult for her to go to the gym. tongue

The new moon is observed tonight here. Most likely this Saturday will be the first day of fasting here.

A group of friends were discussing Ramadan. One of my Indian friends was complaining about fasting in our current weather (over 100 degrees F with 40-80% humidity). The girl from Indonesia laughed and said that was every Ramadan for her. At least my Saudi friends don't have the humidity, but when it's over 120 degrees F in the shade does it really matter?

Anyway, all happiness, success, and strength to all of you during this special time! May you meet all the goals, physical and spiritual you're hoping for!
