It seems to me that many people regard not having sex as not only an undesirable state of being but also as something that can't be done easily.

In most developed societies, as far as I am aware, most people abstain from sex for many years after puberty. And our life is perfectly fine.

Isn't that contradictory?

I'll think of one later

Well, considering how the second sentence is kinda sorta false...

I mean, for one you have stuff like masturbation...

It can't be done easily on a large scale because humans are hardwired at the most basic of levels to seek out sex.

The people who abstain from sex in our society usually has one really large porn folder, or find it somewhere on the web.
Now, remove that, and the lust for sex will at some point get a bit too large.
Essentially masturbation does the same as sex.
If you do not masturbate, and do not have sex, you will at some point crumble under the desire for either one.

Nah, most 11-year-old girls aren't having sex.

Should have said "sex with a partner" then.

I value abstinence the same way the Romans did; a rare and admirable endeavor best undertaken by others.

You had puberty at age 11?
I hit puberty at 12, so 11 is not unreasonable at all.

I'm a virgin and do not masturbate. Don't get me wrong, I've masturbated a lot before. I've always been horny. tongue It's just my sex drive is a lot lower now, and I'm not even capable of masturbating anymore. I think it's my medications.

Wait, do we mean start of puberty puberty, or become hormonal puberty?

I was talking about the start of menstruating. My sex drive appeared out of nowhere when I was 11 (but almost 12).

most people's sex drive kicks in around 12-14, guess when people start to lose their virginity...

The average age is 17 (self-reported, for what it's worth). So I guess it would depend on what the OP meant by many years, but I imagine most people put it off for a while.

AHR: Start of menstruation. Puberty starts earlier, sex drive can develop sooner or later.

Is it abstaining, or just not having the opportunity?

If a person wants to be abstinent, that's their choice. I don't see what one could possibly gain from it, but whatever.

Abstinence-only sex ed in schools, on the other hand... [1]

Ha ha, fascinating hypothesis, But I have found that it was far less "abstaining" and far more "Less chance" to have sex.

It doesn't count as abstinence if you simply can't get laid. That's just not having the opportunity.

Well, I knew quite a few teenagers who really wanted to get laid, but couldn't because of their lack of any social skills whatsoever. So instead of learning social skills or admitting that they needed help, they started just calling themselves "abstinent" because that makes them sound more honorable and Christian(TM) than "loser".

@Suzy: I can't blame them for it, since the stigma against those who can't find love/sexual gratification is fairly nasty. But simply calling yourself "abstinent" doesn't fix the root problem; that there's something you want that you aren't getting.

The ever-increasing number of thirteen year-old pregnant girls is indicative of the fact that "many years" should be read as "a few days" in the second sentence of the OP to make it accurate, at least in most of Britain.

"simply can't get laid"

I've never tried to 'get laid' and I can't make friends anymore either. I wouldn't mind sex (actually sounds great) I just hardly interact with people. But I'm very lonely, so I would love a girlfriend/boyfriend to get all cuddly with. How could I do that? The problem is my severe social anxiety.
