Back in January I made a YKTTW called "Permanent Talisman," which has since disappeared. Basically, it was about Amulets of Dependency that were natural to the creatures they came from.

I'd like to change the article to reflect that some Amulets are not deliberately created, by natural parts of particular supernatural creature's biology. Here are some examples:

Literature

  • The vampires of 19th century fiction are commonly tied to something of significance to them. Dracula was forced to sleep in contact with his native soil, Carmilla had to sleep in a coffin filled with the blood of her victims, and the brothers Ténèbre revived from repeated deaths by regenerating from within their tombs.

Folklore

  • Irish Merrow are forced to wear a red-feathered hat called a cohuleen druith or else lose their water-breathing and shapeshifting powers.
  • Selkies are able to transform between human and seal using magical seal skins.
  • A common tale is that a handsome man comes across the hat, shawl, or animal pelt of a beautiful faerie maiden. He hides it and then forces the maiden to marry him. Years later, after bearing children for him, she comes across the article of clothing and then runs away to freedom.
    • Another variation is that the young man encounters a beautiful woman, who later turns out to be a monster who removes its own skin or detaches its head. The young man pours salt or ashes on the skin or the sleeping body, and when the monster returns, it dies from contact with the irritant or dies later on because it cannot reattach.
  • Werewolves commonly transformed by wearing a wolf-skin pelt or belt. Without the skin they were powerless.

Merging seems very reasonable to me.

As an example of something that is very similar to a natural amulet, consider a Lich's phylactery. Although we're listing that as a Soul Jar, it's a case where there's an arguable crossover with Amulet of Dependency. The phylactery is a necessary element in the creation or birth of a lich, and effectively gives the lich immortality, at the expense of its fate being tied to an external physical object.

Got a holler to lock here but far as I can see the work for this one hasn't been done.

I'm a little unclear about what a "natural" Amulet of Dependency means in this context.

@Camacan

Oops. Forgot about this one. ^^;

I think we could define a "natural Amulet of Dependency" as something that acts as an Amulet of Dependency but is simply part of a being's nature. So if that seems to be the consensus, I'll go ahead and change the page to explain that an Ao D can be created, discovered, or part of a being's nature. Do we need a crowner first?

I went ahead and added a comment to the description to Amulet of Dependency. Are we ready to close this one, or are there any remaining concerns?
