Just goes to prove that Odin was more badass.

Didn't Odin have one eye?

Odin plucked out his one eye, because with two, everybody was way too afraid to look him in the face.

@Blue: No, Odin plucked out his eye in exchange for being able to know everything. It's now sitting at the bottom of a well somewhere. tongue

I'm sorry that some people got the rug pulled from under their feet, but when you really think about this, if you focus on the adults who got screwed (since the kids are the responsibility of the adults, not themselves), you gotta ask yourself: who's to blame? Who's to blame if you sacrifice everything on a scam that you could easily disprove if you bothered to look around and stop to think?

Stupid people should not be abused, but if you're ignorant and lazy enough to not bother to check what BS someone's pulling on you before you sell everything, it's kinda hard to justify blaming anyone but yourself unless you're mentally disabled. One of the most important principles that Western civilization is based on is critical thinking. Why do millions neglect that whenever they're dealing with something that's, you know, actually really important?

I'm not saying that this fraud shouldn't be punished; he totally deserves jail time and to lose all of his profits from this scam to repay at least some of the damages, but for each functional adult that lost everything, this Camping guy is not the person most guilty of their loss. For the kids whose parents wasted everything, they should be taken by social services and adopted into families that can actually take care of them.

A man cannot be fooled by anyone but himself.

Can't be arsed googling who said that originally.

The sad and really scary bit is that in order to believe a scam, you've got to want it to be true - which means that there's a large number of people who want to believe that they will be rewarded and that everyone else is going to be horrifically punished.

I'll leave you all to draw your own conclusions about that mentality...

Personally, I find it kinda hard to believe that anyone would take something as staggeringly silly as this absolutely seriously and as a consequence lose all their shit, but at the same time I totally believe there really are people that dumb and that this stuff really happened. I wouldn't believe it otherwise, but I've seen articles...

What's the general response from Camping's camp? I understand the man himself is holed up in his home.

My personal theory is that the Rapture really did happen yesterday, but everyone is a bad Christian, so no one was actually taken.

Which, of course, makes a very good philosophical debate: if the Rapture happened, but took nobody, and is therefore indistinguishable from it not having happened at all...

Of course, the earthquakes, volcanoes, plagues, and the Earth exploding in a ball of fire will be rather difficult to miss.

I thought the guy has disappeared?

In fact, I think he flew over our house a couple of hours ago. The plane had speakers that were broadcasting what the sole passenger was saying. Amid loads and loads of laughter, I made out "How much is $80 million in Rubles?" and "Hookers and blow, here I come!"

(I just checked; it's about 2.25 billion Russian rubles. If you divide the money equally between hookers and blow, you'll get 315 metric tonnes of coke and about 146 years with 5 hookers every night*

in Russia.)

Either this guy fled the country afraid of the angry mobs or he offed himself. Or in a fit of Irony died and has to answer for what he has done.

Yeah, I actually meant to write my post as expanding on the suggestion that he fled, but the sub-clause required to specify this fled my mind somewhere between clicking "add a post" and writing it.
