This thread exists to discuss British politics.
Political issues related to Northern Ireland and the Crown Dependencies (the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) are also considered on-topic here if there's no more appropriate OTC thread for them.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
As with other OTC threads, off-topic posts may be thumped or edited by the moderators.
- There is a dedicated thread to discuss LGBTQ+ rights in the United Kingdom. That doesn't mean it's always off-topic here, but unless something's directly linked to political events, that's probably a better thread for it.
- There's also a separate thread to talk about your favourite British Prime Ministers.
Recent political stuff:
- The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
- Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
- The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

And not a moment too soon...
It can be a moment too soon, depending on what Labour's strategy is for the case that they become the government before the Brexit process is completed i.e when they'll become the fall guys for Brexit. ~Silas W, are you aware of what that gameplan might be?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanYeah, Labour is probably better off politically not forming a government just yet, so the Tories can't blame them when Brexit punch the UK in the throat.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. At the same time, a lot of people seem to be counting on Labour to prevent Brexit from being a complete clusterfuck. Hopefully they don't have unrealistic expectations of Labour saving the day — at best Labour would probably only be able to make Brexit a 70% clusterfuck.
Disgusted, but not surprisedWe're already in a clusterfuck: there is no escaping it at this point. Maybe mitigating it, but that's about it. We hit the clusterfuck event horizon when May did her "Brexit is Brexit" bravura speech of stupid after most Brexiteers made like rats leaving a sinking ship rather than touching the leadership position themselves.
The only thing we can do is pick how epically we splat or bounce against the pavement.

I know our current focus for Brexit is to look at a Soft Brexit of sorts, any details beyond that aren't information I have access to (all my Labour contacts keep failing to get elected to national office).
At a guess I imagine we'd try and play some political games, a Labour government might be able to convince Europe to give us an extension on the divorce process, avoiding the Tories dropping us in the shit.
Plus with the Tories having been in power for a while now a fresh Labour government might be able to do what Cameron did and spend a fair amount of time blaming everything on "the mess left to us by the last government".
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranBut this time it would be true, a global banking crisis caused by American banks can't really be blamed on Labour... unless you live in the same La La Land as the Tory's
advancing the front into TV TropesSomeone has recut Monty Python and the Holy Grail with Theresa May, and it is glorious.
Seriously, best 2.5 minutes you'll spend all day, it's really amazing!

...Was that Macron blowing raspberries at May?! Glorious.
Disgusted, but not surprisedDouble post for topic change:
Okay, who didn't see this coming? Besides May.
Disgusted, but not surprisedCould be worse.
Could be what I just saw on the news (Sky) about fears that there's been a systemic, top-down Hillsborough cover-up of the figures of the Grenville dead to try to prevent rioting. Anybody want to guess what will happen if that proves to be the case down the line, whenever that should come to light, if it is remotely true?
Anybody?

If that's true...that would be bad. That would be "marching on Parliament" bad.
Disgusted, but not surprisedRemember when the British had a reputation for being boring?
Me neither.
Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.Well, when the articles about survivors of Grenfell being rehoused were coming out I saw a number of references to 200 people (presumably rounded); so probably about 300-400 dead depending on the total occupancy at the time. And it is only because there were a significant proportion of Muslims there and it was during Ramadan that it isn't worse. Last I heard presumed dead was only 79. Someone's fudging the figures.
I miss boring times.
Disgusted, but not surprisedThe presence of undocumented residents and visitors also made things difficult.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. As expected, Sexit Ref 2 is postponed
Interestingly, their allies the Greens are up in arms about this, insisting that a referendum should still go ahead. The Greens pushing for independence stronger than the SNP...not exactly what I expected.
In lighter news, a newsagent who lost his legal fight over being called Singhsbury's has renamed his shop to Morrisingh's. Morrisons are completely cool with it, claiming he and his customers have good taste. Good guy Morrisons there!
Can we please not call it Sexit. It's bad enough talking about a breakfast cereal all the time.
Avatar Source"Scexit" sounds like it belongs in The Dark Crystal, though. Get those skeksis out!
Indyref 2: Electric Boogaloo?
Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.Sexit Ref 2 sounds like the sequel to a cheap porn flick that nobody really wanted.
Disgusted, but not surprisedNot sure if they are fudging the figures or if they have simply not managed to search the whole building yet, but yeah, the was the government handles the "how many died" question does feel dishonest.
So I was browsing The Guardian as I am wont to do these days, and this caught my eye.
Council refuses to back down after Sikh couple denied chance to adopt white child
British-born Sandeep and Reena Mander said they had wanted the chance to adopt a child of any ethnic background. But they were refused the chance to apply by Windsor and Maidenhead council’s agency, Adopt Berkshire.
It said that as only white children were in need, white British or European applicants would be given preference so the couple could not put their names down as potential adopters.
Experts expressed astonishment at the case as it appears to clearly flout the Children and Families Act of 2014, which ended the practice of allowing only ethnic matches for adopted children.
The Manders’ case was taken up by their MP, Theresa May, in the form of a letter to the council, and the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC). But despite the intervention and a round of media interviews given by the Manders on Tuesday, the council is sticking to its decision.
This is fucked up on so many levels.
Disgusted, but not surprisedThere doesn't need to be a coverup - tower fires make it an absolute bitch to identify bodies. For reference, there were approximately ten thousand people in the World Trade Center when it got hit, and it's generally assumed that more than half didn't make it out alive. The official death toll is just under 3,000, and the last casualty was identified in 2008.
What's precedent ever done for us?
They need the DUP votes to account for possible Tory rebels, even the DUP abstaining on some votes could cause the Tories to loose key votes.
That's before you consider that the DUP might actually vote with Labour, it's the DUP, they give no shits and could do anything, sure they won't vote with Labour on most votes, but all it takes is a single vote of no confidence and the Tories are out.
