I need a name for a kind of supernatural beings I thought up. The name will be what the Roman empire used to call these guys (the guy who's saying it was Sealed Evil in a Can for a long time). In this world, the Roman empire had a number of soldiers possessed by various spirit beings to give them superpowers. This being is one such spirit being.

It's mostly got Anti-Magic powers - it eats magic and magical beings (in modern times they've been eating vampires). It can also read the minds of magical beings. It also has slight electromagnetic powers, which mostly means that it tends to short out electrical stuff. But I was thinking that with very extensive training, it may be possible to weaponize this as lightning bolts and attracting metal. None of the modern ones are capable of this, and only very few of the ancient Romans were.

So, what would be a good name for them?

If I'm asking for advice on a story idea, don't tell me it can't be done.

Alright. So, to summarise:

  • They eat magic.
  • They eat magical beings.
  • They can read the minds of magical beings.
  • They have weak electromagnetic powers.

Given that these would be soldiers possessed by spirits, a Latin name for them would probably be derived from Roman religion in some way.

Here's a few ideas:

Milites Solis - Soldiers of the Sun. Singular form is Miles Solis. Derives from the Roman sun-cult (post-274 AD, imperial cult) of Sol Invictus, the Unconquered Sun.

Magophagus or Magophage - Derives from Greek (spoken by most educated Romans). Means 'Magic-eater' or 'Eater of magicians'.

Phantasma Esuriens - Literally, Hungry Ghost. Forms a connection with the sanskrit term preta which means something similar.

Legio Phantasmatum - The Ghost Legion (literally, Legion of Ghosts). Term for the group as a whole.
