Why didn't he do this over 2 years ago? I'm not a birther, but it doesn't take a genius to realize you quash such controversies before they begin.

^ Because there should have been no controversy. He had supplied a Certificate of Live Birth, and the State of Hawaii confirmed his records. To doubt it any further is disrespectful and inane.

He shouldn't have done this. It made the right look like a bunch of fucking lunatics, which could have worked in his advantage.

People will call it fake, I'd bet on it.

Also I cant believe Trump is patting himself on the back and saying that he's the hero in all of this...

^^^ Perhaps because he wanted his opponents to base as much of their campaigns as possible on the whole "birther" issue, so to resolve this sad excuse for a controversy some time closer to the next elections (now it sounds about right) and be able to ridicule them for having raised such a fuss on the first place?

At least, that's what I would have done.

He should have either released this at the start or outright refuse the frankly ridiculous demands. Now they can just claim he spent 2 years getting it faked.

Yeah I don't see the point. It's not like facts matter to these guys.

These guys are irrelevant as far as Obama's campaign strategy is concerned: it's not like they were going to vote for him anyway.

The point is trying to make to have them - and most importantly, by extension, the whole Republican party, including these sections of it which are not as insane - look as ridiculous as possible to the electors who are still unsure who to vote for.

^ Problem is, those kinds of people, don't judge based on issues like birth certificates. Actions are more influencing than personal documents.

The past 2+ years of actions is pretty damning for the Democrats compared to the idea of the GOP being insane over a birth certificate.

Thinking people will vote for somebody (or vote against somebody) because of the birth certificate is also irrelevant.

Which is why, like Obama said, this whole debacle is fucking embarrassing.

Not going to make a shred of difference any more than his Live Birth Certificate or the testimony of the Republican Governor of Hawaii did. Yahweh himself could appear in the heavens and proclaim it and they'd say he was Allah in disguise covering for Obama.

Sounds like Trump won't be one of them.

He basically had a press release that went along the lines of "See, I'm awesome."

^^^^^^^ Not being American, I do not really have an opinion about Obama's internal policies - I have just not followed what he did closely enough for that.

As for his foreign policy, it was not overwhelming IMO: I think that it was a marked improvement from his predecessor*

^{Quite frankly, he could have goatse'd the UN, proclaimed his eternal allegiance to Satan the Dark Lord and declared war on Atlantis and he'd still have been an improvement over Bush, so that's not much of an achievement .}

But in any case, trying to make opponents look silly is a viable campaign tactic, and it seems to me that Obama releasing his certificate now might be part of something like that.

A little off topic but I'm lolling at the ad underneath the reply button that says something like "OBAMA WENT TO WAR WITH LIBYA WITHOUT CONGRESSIONAL APPROVAL"

Really, this just goes to show how poor the politics in America has become that he actually needs to produce a birth certificate. That's just ridiculous.

What's relevant to the discussion is how the teabagger party, backed by the GOP, was pressing this issue. Actions are more important? Well that's the Republicans acting on total nothing, being proven wrong and still don't care. Shall we vote in people who talk all day about birth certificates?

But yes, the unpleasable types are exactly why I would have continued letting them rant. Or better yet, authorize the state of Hawaii to charge people 100,000$ to look at the records.
