In memory, I suggest we replace and shut-down the remaining RBMK reactors.
I agree it should be shut down, but only once a viable alternative, like one of the new designs the Russians are working on, are put in place.

Final Fantasy, Foreign Policy, and Bollywood. Helluva combo, that...It? There is more than one RBMK reactor remaining. And I chose "replace and shut-down" deliberately. Was it unclear to you?
I'm just saying it wouldn't be able to be done in lieu of the anniversary. And seeing as I edited my remark before you posted yours, could you kindly not call me out for something I caught on my own?
Final Fantasy, Foreign Policy, and Bollywood. Helluva combo, that...I read it as it was, and didn't click post for a bit. Thanks for correcting yourself though. I appreciate it.
Sorry if you felt called out, I was just wondering it I was unclear about my meaning.

I've always wanted to visit the zone of alienation.
Kind of fascinating.
My other signature is a Gundam.Yeah, me too. I hear that the Ukraine might open up certain areas for tourism, but I had also heard that they were already doing that.
Either way, I'd like to check that off of my bucket list.
Happiness is zero-gee with a sinus cold.Touring Pripyat is definitely on my bucket list.
Sweet. I'll look you up when I'm ready to go.
Happiness is zero-gee with a sinus cold.nice, now i've got an excuse to use my S.T.A.L.K.E.R. avatar.
hashtagsarestupidGotta do it soon though. Before they tear down Duga 3 and the old containment sarcophagus. That thing is iconic.
My other signature is a Gundam.Too hot to rip it down, I'd imagine... although the containment structure is a rickety piece of crap hastily built, and it does need to be replaced - good luck actually tearing apart the reactor itself, though. The inside of that place is a complete mess, with some incredibly-potent radiation levels still to be found in some spots. Makes Fukushima look like an operating room prepped for surgery, in comparison...
they have a replacement structure planned - supposed to have been done in 2005, but they've pushed that back to 2013.
Happiness is zero-gee with a sinus cold. The new containment is supposed to go over on top of the old one, I think it's supposed to be constructed nearby, then they move it by rail on top.
I was nine when this happened.
One of my Ukranian friends dimly remembers this when it happened, as it occurred prior to him moving to the US (just prior to the fall of the USSR).
I saw a very good Discoery Channel thingy-bopper about it on youtube, although it has a lot of untranslated Russian in it. Had my Ukranian friend translate a bit for me, when he was able to recover his jaw from off the floor.
