Has there been any announcement that this will get an English-language release yet?

Nope. This is Sega we're talking about here. They're not quite 'Segac' anymore, but expect to wait a while.

Two things that I'm liking so far about the trailer is the inclusion of jumping and third-person shooting mode.

Honestly, I never played or seen any Phantasy Star releases, like ever, but seeing this makes me want to do one thing: rap this out

Now let's get down to business
I don't have the time to play around, what is this
Must be the best game out now, let's shut the shit down this time
Can I get this game now (Hell Yeah!)

There's a beta going on in Japan. A well known fighting game player, Maximillian, somehow managed to get into the beta and has a whole series of You Tube videos showing his experiences with the PSO2 beta.

It wasn't too hard to get into the beta no matter what region you're in, so I'm sure he "somehow" got in pretty easily. Just need a bit of pattern recognition to tell which healing items are better and such, but it's perfectly manageable without knowing a lick of Japanese.

He noted in his character creation video that he got a fanmade patch that translates a good chunk of the menu items into English.

A fanmade translation patch for a beta? That's probably not a first, but it's the first I've heard of it. Good to see it already has a fanbase over here.

Giant Bomb has also done a Quick Look and a hour and 30 minute Live Stream of the game, and from what I've seen of the game it looks interesting. I remember the original Phantasy Star online vaguely so I'm looking at all this with some idea of what is going on.

[up]I remember Phantasy Star Online being way more fun then it should have been. The gameplay was incredibly clunky, it was impossible to get it... Well... online, interesting loot never dropped, you had to play the same levels over and over again, it was on the freakin' gamecube...

But you know what? The world looked AWESOME. The fact that I couldn't play online meant I just had to play splitscreen. Four player splitscreen. The monster designs where crazy and each creature had its' own gimmick.

And the bosses.

Oh man. The bosses. I starts with a giant dragon, it's a massive monster that was bigger than any foe I had faced in a game before. It swept fiery breath across the entire arena. It flew through the air and burrowed through the ground just as easily. Taking it on with three of my buddies as we scrambled around trying to dodge its' attacks and healing eachother was exhilirating.

And they got crazier and better from there!

2 looks like it has incredibly fast and slick combat and I know it adds random events to spruce up the levels you'll be hiking through. It's free. It's on the PC. And I'm sure they know what they're doing with the loot now.

Soooo... Basically it fixes everything wrong with the first game that made it a terrible game and keeps all the things that made me keep playing it anyway.

So I'm pretty excited.

Does anybody know where information on the plot of PSO-2 can be found. I've been to the usual places and can't find even a brief summery of the game's story.

I don't think this is ever going to come out in English thanks to Sega's money woes.

And the PC version is a dumpster fire, apparently.

They likely won't release a version on the PS 4 or Switch.

Its not so much the NA version is a dumpster fire sao much as the official launcher is a dumpster fire. The game itself works fine if you either slog through the myriad bugs microsoft somehow added, or go around it by using the fan tweaker, which seems to solve all the problems
