Equestria is actually an insane asylum

Princess Celestia is a warden. Spike and Twilight Sparkle are inmates, but are sufficiently respected to be given favored positions. Celestia sending Twilight to learn the "magic of friendship" is actually a way of killing two birds with one stone: she hopes to cure Twilight's social anxiety while also using Twilight to cure the folks of Ponyville.

Unfortunately Pinkie Pie may be beyond help...

Equestria is actually the Heaven (or Asgard, or Mt Olympus or whatever) of G1's Ponyland

Meaning two things: One, the ponies in Friendship is Magic are actually gods (somewhat validated by that they control the seasons and everything), and two, it means they're all good little ponies who died at some point.

It raises the question of what "Pony Hell" would be though (an episode of The Glo Friends perhaps?)

Humans will show up at some point

I'm intrigued by the Asgard comparison; after all, Dream Valley did have a rainbow bridge to Earth...

How about just Ponyville being the insane asylum? Then Twilight rightly came to the conclusion that all the ponies there are crazy. Celestia must have sent Twilight there for her unhealthy obsession over a silly legend. Nightmare Moon and other villains would then just be delusions like the scary-faced trees that Twilight needed help to conquer.

1st Theory: I like this theory, but I like to believe it's just Ponyville that's an insane asylum.

2nd Theory: It's an interesting theory. And I like the Asgard comparison; it reminds me of the rainbow bridge from G1 and how it's similar to the Bifrost.

3rd Theory: I'd like to see Megan appear, but it's probably not going to happen.
