How does evolution work in the roleplay? For example, if an Eevee evolved into an Umbreon, how would this work?

Could you clarify what you mean by that question? Like, are you asking if something specific would be needed to evolve one IRP? What sort of mechanics underly a Pokemon evolution? Something else?

Would there be a process I would have to go through? I know that Umbreon has a different ability than Eevee, so I want to know how to address that change.

Oh, no need. You just evolve your Pokemon when it seems like a good time to do so from a story perspective. And we just have ability changes like that be a thing that happens, assuming you're not asking for the Umbreon to have an ability other than Synchronize or Inner Focus or anything.

So it came to our attention in the chat that, even though the normal method of getting a Z-Ring in Alola is to do the island challenge and beat your first Grand Trial... but there's also a number of characters, in canon, that somehow got theirs another way — namely, most of the trainers that returned from previous games to take part in the Battle Tree. This, of course, means there's precedence for our non-Trial-taking characters to get Z-Rings, but the question is, how? How should we handle those?

I'd say they'd have to be earned in some fashion, as is the case for getting a Key Stone most of the time. (That reminds me, did we ever decide if newbies going forward can start out with Z-Rings if they came from Alola?)

I'd vote in that case, it'd be fine, if they were old enough to have done the Island Challenge.

Though, for earning, should they maybe do something special for the Kahuna of a given island so that they'd get it from them? Or would something else be better instead?

I only played partway through the second island, but I do remember hearing something about only the Kahunas know how to process the stone/make a ring for it. So I'd be fine with finding a stone one way or another and having to do something for the Kahuna in exchange for processing, at least as a possible way of doing it?
