Hey, if you frequent Kongregate, they have a section devoted to MMOs. You could give that a whirl. Maybe there's a good free one in there somewhere.

If you're talking about browser-based, I'd say Adventure Quest Worlds, except it's definitely an Allegedly Free Game.

Fun fact I'll just leave here: Ultima Online can essentially be freeware if you play on one of the custom Shards.
