Double post, but Interview with Miles and Kerry

Miles confirms that Filiss is supposed to sound sad and there is discussion about Felix's dick.

Felix's dick, or Felix is a dick?

I know what I typed. It's a silly conversation, Miles at one point compares it to a credit card. "He slides it in and you pay for his time."

I'm at season five. This series mainly keeps me at a low chuckle, but every once in a while something comes out that just makes me bust out laughing. "Is your mom a flaming sword swallower? Because we could use somebody to replace Donut".

Sounds about right! Keep us updated on your progress, stuff gets real interesting from here on out!

(And are you watching the mini-series'? They're pretty plot important!)

My season-by-season assessment:

1: Blazingly original, lots of clever jokes, great deconstruction of the Halo multiplayer setup. First ten episodes are consistently great, but it peters out in the second half of the season.

2: Similar pattern to season 1, starting strong, slowly petering out into a fairly forgettable middle. The finale is great, though.

3: Once again, great start, and the goodness is more scattered around. There are some absolute gems littered throughout the season, but things start to go downhill. Suffers especially from having several big climaxes, and the ending paling in comparison to the mid-season antics.

4: Absolute nadir of the series. Not that it's devoid of anything good, but I've watched it multiple times and can barely remember anything that happened in it.

5: Lots of great stuff, especially toward the end, so it's a notch below season 3. Also, Sister is basically Poochie, IMO.

6: Tight, coherent story with great twists and solid retcons. Builds a very strong foundation for the rest, and works as a nice optional finale to the first five seasons. (To me, the true ending of seasons 1-5 is the "Everyone dies" alternate ending.)

7: Another really forgettable season. I actually cannot remember anything from this except for "YOU WILL FEAR MY LASER FACE."

8: Some huge high points thanks to Monty Oum, and it moves the characters forward. Just kind of serviceable, in that regard.

9: On the one hand, I like this season. On the other hand, it's hugely self-indulgent, but mostly in ways that work. The Freelancer thread is full of spectacle and action, despite meandering through a lot of pre-ordained plot points; there's a lot of charm and effort and life to it. The essential re-do of season 1 is far more worthwhile than I would have thought; it's rather neat to see everything redone to better utilize the characters, but it is still essentially a story about video game NP Cs.

10: Just kind of collapses under the weight of everything it had to do. The Freelancer stuff kinda plods along to all of its predetermined plot points; the main arc drags a little. The themes from season 9 get brought forward and are strengthened from the comparison between seasons, but it's kind of fatiguing at this point.

11: Oh God do I love this season. This is a wonderful fresh start for the show. Doesn't have the genius, one-in-a-million jokes that season 1 and 2 had, but it does have some fantastically built gags, great character interactions, actual character arcs, and generally great comedy. Strongest overall season, if not home to any of the best episodes or jokes.

12: Takes a while to get going, but this is a more satisfying way to transition the series into seriousness than 7-10, at least by my estimate. A completely different take on the "pointless warfare" concept, which makes this season resonate with what came before despite bringing a lot of newness to the table. Lots of great new characters, too. More effective than any previous season at making me want to see more, for whatever value that has.

Did you write all of that down, or did you record your thoughts over a period of time as you finished each season?

Finished Blood Gulch Chronicles. About to start Recovery One, I think this is where they introduce Washington, right? Is this where things start to get more plot-filled? Also, there are alternate endings to Episode 100?

@FOFD That's all spontaneous. I've been re-watching big chunks of the series recently, and tend to have thoughts and comparisons like that swimming around my head in general.

It was... really unexpected. I mean, I had heard the series got some massive Cerebus Syndrome, but I would've never guessed that the almost completely comedic and random series of the Blood Gulch Chronicles would become... this. I had been spoiled on a twist or two, but the execution was great in any case. The Wham Lines in episodes 16 and 19 were something else. And Church cemented himself even further as my favorite character. His banter with Washington was an absolute joy to behold. Shame about the Heroic Sacrifice. I really hope it's not the last of him.

You know Ninety, I am not at all surprised that Church is your favourite.

Also I too am looking forward to reactions.

Oh hello, thread! I haven't ben here because I wanted to catch up with season 12 first. I archive binged the series a year ago but before season 11 was complete and then I promptly forgot about it. Then I archive binged it again about two months ago only this time I got to finish season 11 and 12.

Now that I have, I would like to say that the entire series is great. It has its ups an downs but overall I love RVB. Yes, even the Project Freelancer stuff. I read this entire thread and find the dislike of the Re-stuff a mite confusing and Space Jawa to be an extremely frustrating person.

Anyhow, So... Who else hopes for more stuff about the Reds? I noticed rather quickly that everything important seems to go on with the Blues, including the character development. I mean, we got more out of Wash and he was a new addition. I mean, it's my favourite colour but Blue may have a little too much spotlight.

though I did love what they were doing with Tucker this season.

In other news, I miss Doc, but love Dr. Gray.

I would state my favourite character but I can't because... Everyone. I like everyone. Hell, I even want Sister back.

For some reason I expected the team's biggest a-hole to be someone you liked but I for the life of my can't reason why I would think that.

I could take a cheap shot and say it has something to do with Vriska but Church is a completely different brand of a-hole than she is and nowhere near as bad.

Interesting that you think Vriska is a worse person Mousa. Are you counting the Director in this assessment?

Oh Hell No, I should have clarified. He's slightly more sympathetic but the Director is almost as awful as Vriska is. I should have clarified. I'm just used to referring to our hero as Church.

Besides, once entities are divided, despite being technically "The same person" ,their individual experiences will always differentiate them enough to identify them as separate entities no matter how few different experiences they've had.

True true! I thought it was an interesting comparison because they're so unrelated in my brain, even while being sometimes sympathetic but largely irredeemable antagonists while they were alive. And even while Vriska has (arguably) done much worse things than the Director did... directly, he's so distant you can't get attached to him or understand him.

... Even though he is Leonard Church.

All that is very true. It's these cross fandom friendships that help build these comparisons. Being an omnidiscplinary geek rules. I mean come on, a blue-clad jackass that treats the rest of their respective teams like crap? Two peas in a pod, Church and Vriska, Director Church ten times moreso.

Yeah, both are Leonard Church... Somehow. The grand unifying thing that makes The Director and Alpha/Epsilon the same is that they're all gigantic jackasses. My theory at this point is that part of the reason why they seem so separate is that Church is sort of a younger version of the Director, like if he was in his twenties, still coming out of his angsty and rage-y teen years and still finding his way in life. By the time he's The Director's age he'd be mellowed out, colder and more bitter.

Well, I'm only on season seven, but Church cannot possibly be/get any worse than the Director, can he?
