I just looked at Youtube and I see nothing indicating this; how did you get to see that?

You only need to login if you want to see videos flagged as indecent or if you want to comment, and that's when you'll meet with the new restrictions. For people who just want to watch the (unflagged) majority of videos nothing has changed, which is why there's probably not as much noise as we might expect.

It's not a Gmail account, it's a Google account. I don't have a gmail address (or at least, I think I don't) but I have registered a Google account because a friend of mine shared some Google Docs.

What exactly is the benefit of a Gmail account? All I see is another way for people to track your internet activity, because hackers, identity theft and popups based on what web pages I visit are things I'd appreciate.
