Don't mention it. At all. Ever read the Giver? We don't realize the characters can't see in color until half way through.
It should be that people act oddly to him, and he can't understand why, and it is only when he finds out do we find out.

An idea I had recently: Gender Flip the main character of Toumei Shoujo Ea, and write from his perspective. My idea is that he is a hybrid/enhanced human who was raised in a lab and treated more like an animal than a human, because he was intended to be used as an emotionless weapon. But just after he reaches legal age, he escapes.
The dilemma: how would this character think and act? He would begin the story with a very feeble grasp on human emotion, and almost no knowledge of how the world works. His perspective might be incoherent, and rather alien.
I figure the story might make more sense if the reader is (also) given the perspective of a normal person who helps him escape, adjust to real life, and cope with his more dangerous powers...
