As someone who liked Eggman in Colors, I hate his portrayal in Boom.
Really, the more I watch Scykoh play Boom, the more I hate it.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!...what changed in Boom? Different outfit, more more spontaneous, but the bumbling, goofy mad scientist aspect is still there. He doesn't have Orbot and Cubot?
His banter got worse?

Akira Toriyama (April 5 1955 - March 1, 2024).Not sure about the games, but the robot poop gang is definitely still around in Boom.

"Tell them to shut up and have some faith in me." - dead flashback guyIn Colors, he was funny and effective (he actually would have won if not for something he couldn't have predicted). Same goes for Generations (although with less funny). In Boom, he's an annoying little shit and more ineffective than I can ever recall him being.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Tis the great sin of Boom: ineffectiveness.

Maybe I should've specified character who died over the course of the series. I forgot about Emerl, though.
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.Clearly I've missed something here, but you asked:
All the ones I mentioned are from the series. I excluded Gamma because someone mentioned him already, and forgot about Emerl. Still, that's maybe 7-10 characters that have died, half of which have been revived, out of 50 or more characters introduced so far.

Akira Toriyama (April 5 1955 - March 1, 2024).Tikal and Maria are backstory characters who don't die during the course of the series but far before the events of it - in the same vein, the entire tribe of Echidnas who Tikal belonged to are dead, but they're also part of the backstory. Tikal also Ascended to a Higher Plane of Existence and is technically still around (I don't know why Sonic Team has never reused her), so to the characters' point of view she's not quite as dead as, say, Gamma is.
Characters whose deaths didn't matter by way of being reversed (or never actually happened) admittedly weren't on my radar either.
The random thought that got me asking was wondering who might be considered "killed off" characters in the series, and/or whose death was experienced by the player, but then the only person I could think of who they would think of was Gamma. I did forget about Emerl, though.

"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.Although Maria was playable outside of a multiplayer sequence in Shadow's game(or story mode, basically), so her death is far more impactful for some players. We don't really see or hear Tikal's death all that well. It's not blatant. We know she's dead due to her being a spirit, or it's assumed, anyway.
Still a neat character, though.

My little cousin wants a 2DS for Christmas…with Sonic Boom.
Maybe I can sabotage the gift somehow and switch out with a better game...
"Accidentally" buy Lost World instead. It's still Sonic and Lost World isn't shit.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!I wouldn't say Gamma died. The living creature that Gamma consisted of was technically the bird. If anything, all he did was break out of his shell and to stop being mind controlled.
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.Buy Smash Bros. or the 3DS version of Generations if he REALLY wants a Sonic game.
You know, I have to wonder why Pit is obsessed with this site. It’s gonna ruin his life!Burn a CD with "Sonic Boom" on it instead.
Except instead of the original by Pastiche or the Crush 40 version, find a recording of some idiot shouting the lyrics over and over.
Like maybe this:

Insert witty 'n clever quip here.I can't believe that. I've played the demos for both and the Lost World demo was far more fun than Shattered Crystal.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Reports are that the first level of Lost World is fine, but it takes a sharp downward turn.
This might give you a good idea of it:
I support Lost World too. As I have played it, and it's immensely fun, imo(3DS version).
I don't see why you need to avoid Shattered Crystal, though. It's hardly considered bad by any means, just "not spectacular". It has less controversy than Unleashed ever did(mostly due to the Werehog). Keep in mind I'm talking about what actually happened, not my own specific opinions here(except the earlier paragraph).
If nothing else (just going off of what I've heard), Shattered Crystal seems way better than Rise of Lyric at least. If you're into Metroidvania type games, you might like to give it a shot. (I'm not, to be honest—the only one I've ever given a full playthrough is Kirby And The Amazing Mirror, and that was a pain in the ass to 100%, or even to find the right pathways to beat it at times.)
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.Speaking as a huge Metroidvania fan, Kirby And The Amazing Mirror is very much a pain by our standards since you have access to pretty much every power immediately and it's not always obvious what power you need to get to certain places.

Ah, that's what happened to him.
He didn't; I don't like the way he's been portrayed/written since Unleashed. His goofiness became too much.
