They answer this in either one of the Tailstubes or Twitter Takeovers (can't remeber which). The Emeralds got the Superstars powers specifically because of the energy of the island they were on in Superstars. Once they left the place, those powers ceased to exist.
You shouldn't. There's no reason the plot has to explain Art Evolution.

"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain. The art evolution is canon, as in, due to Classic Sonic (black eyes) and Modern Sonic (green eyes) both appearing in the same works, Sonic must have had both eye colours at different points in his life (so it's not the eye colour-equivalent to a retcon). I still don't think they really need to explain it, but I also wouldn't say it's just art evolution.

Sonic frequently had Brown eyes in the Archie comics (and some promo art) under certain artists...the explanation was likely only because the change had to be consistent from that point onward.
They didn't explain Tails getting blue eyes because...those same artists already gave him blue eyes in prior comics, so the only difference is that it became permanent.

YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.It almost always is. It's rare to find a series where the artsyle has changed over the time, but that change isn't "canon."
For instance, if Batman has a bit where we get a throwback to the Golden Age era, then we'll have a modern Batman in the same space as someone who looks like Golden Age Batman (I picked this example because that exact situation happens to Batman - and superhero characters in general, really - all the time, and literally the only time I've ever seen any writer feel the need to stop the plot to outline why it happened is in Justice League: The New Frontier, which trying to do something specific with the character).
It's still Art Evolution, and still isn't something that the plot ever needs to go out of its way to explain. The audience is well aware that the actual reason it's different is just because the artstyle of the series has changed over the years, so forcing a canon explanation onto it is completely unnecessary - if anything, it would most likely just being detrimental and intrusive.

"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain. Also we have contradictory evidence about Classic Sonic's differences, in some scenes he looks so similar to Sonic that even Sonic himself mistakes C. Sonic as his reflection in a mirror (and vice-versa), and in others characters pick up on minor details such as Knuckles asking if he's "put on weight" or Blaze noting he's "less spiky". None of these lines address the eyes though, so C. Sonic's likely just a vaguely chubbier, less spiky, slightly younger Sonic.
And as for Twitter Takeover, one of the answers has the characters confirm that all Sonic media exists within the Takeovers based on their lives, so it's technically a different canon than the games themselves. That being said, they still closely follow the games, so it's likely that non-contradictory information from the games should still be applicable.

Ever since the movie got announced, I’ve been seeing a fun uptick of wholesome “Shadow and Maria on the ARK” fan art. It’s really interesting.
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.I wish I could go back in time and convince the developers of Sonic Mania to avoid re-using previous levels, like what was finally done with Sonic Superstars, except for the fact that "Superstars" got mixed reviews so the effort ended up being wasted.
If you play with fire, you're gonna get burned. The reused levels was Sega's request.
To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back.Superstars' issues aren't really connected to the idea of every level being brand new instead of re-used.
"That we continue to persist at all is a testament to our faith in one another."IMO, Super Stars isn't as in depth as Mania or 3, but it's a perfectly fun game that gives you quick zones to blast through, a variety of characters to play with, and a bunch of powers to use as you see fit. It seems like up until the final bosses, the game's more about being a fun neo-Classic Sonic experience. And in that regard, I think it does exactly what it sets out to do. Could've been 20 bucks though.
Like, for my kids, it's a quick pick up and play game they can finish levels with, without the occasionally cheap moments or time limit of the Genesis games to frustrate them. Also they think Trip is the coolest character.
If I had to cite one thing that was the main issue with Superstars, it was the extreme disproportionate difficulty of some of the bosses, yeah.
SoundCloudI feel like Mania had that problem too, though. The initial release, at least.
Eh, maybe, but I don’t think it was even close to as bad as Superstars was in that area.
SoundCloudI honestly thought the bosses of Superstars were satisfyingly challenging. EXCEPT the Super Sonic boss fight. Unless they drastically increase the ring drop rate, I'm never fighting that thing again.
It's not even about how tough the bosses are, it's about how none of them are remotely fun to fight, so being forced to sludge through them until you get The Run is a complete chore.
If they were difficult but fun, then we'd be hearing a different tune surrounding the boss fights instead of what we got.
I do writing, feel free to check out my stories here! https://numbugwritingblog.tumblr.com/post/686233243868102656/numbugs-shared-heroic-uniDespite my only experience with Superstars being through playthroughs, I will say that I think even the likes of Heavy Gunner, Caterkillar (Tornado version), and Metal Sonic (Plus version) are much better than any of the bosses from Superstars, especially the 3 final bosses. Seriously, how can you have that many final bosses, yet not a single one is even half way decent? They really wanted to ramp up the difficulty to compensate for the lack of lives, didn't they? For Solaris' sake, the true true final boss looks even worse than HD Time Eater (speaking of which, how many of you guys are actually looking forward to that again? Granted, I'm not doing it because I don't really care about Generations enough to even touch the main game, I'm only getting it for Shadow).
No rain could douse the flames that burn within me!The instructions for Time Eater were bad and monotonous (hopefully that's fixed), but there's really not much to it once you figure out what you're supposed to do. Looking forward to it? No. Dreading it? Also no.
Generations is by far my favourite game in the franchise, but it is a shame that it starts strong and just gets better and better until the Planet Wisp stages and the Time Eater. I'd rather a game start weaker and end strong, but the vast majority of the game is peak sonic for me until that point (though I still enjoy the Planet Wisp stages, just think they are a large step down).
Oh definitely, more good game is better than less regardless of when it occurs. It's just that I'd rather the same amount of weak parts at the start instead of having them at the end.
Edited by king15 on Apr 11th 2024 at 7:13:41 PM
I've played games that start weak and stay weak for a long time but end strong, and tbh, I'd rather have "strong most of the time, but weak ending" than "weak most of the time, but strong ending." With the former, I'm having more fun.
EDIT: Eggman is confirmed to have gained weight for the new Sonic movie! And Shadow will have his motorcycle. This is according to people who saw new footage at CinemaCon.

No Rouge nor Amy, so, phoey.
To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back.C'mon, man, at least we get new cool stuff.
It's only one or two scenes, so there may be more characters that they haven't revealed yet.
I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!
I mean, people weren't expecting Frontiers to be the Surprisingly Improved Sequel it was, and yet it became so, so there's always hope!
