This might be one of the few periods where the 3D titles really can afford to take a rest for a bit to recharge as the franchise is carried by a sub series. The 2000-2011 era had solid Sonic handheld titles but which lacked the major buzz of its console brothers, and the 2012-2016 suffered from either lackluster or meh games from the the two pseudo spin-offs in Lost World and Boom.
Mania's got enough positive momentum at the moment where Modern Sonic's absence won't be quite as damaging to the franchise as a whole.
That said, I do worry about what adverse effects having Headcannon churn out Mania games every year could have on the games' quality.
So have it just be every two years? With DLC updates in the off years?

What's everything that happened this SXSW, relating to Sonic?
I'm hearing some fragmented things, but I think it would be easier to get all of it if I hear (or read :p) it all together.
I do writing, feel free to check out my stories here! https://numbugwritingblog.tumblr.com/post/686233243868102656/numbugs-shared-heroic-uniI'm still kinda miffed Mighty and Ray of all characters get playable status when they're basically just memes about how obscure Sonic characters they are, yet characters like Blaze and Amy haven't gotten any announcements yet.
Amy could get a pass, but Blaze debuted in fucking 2005.
x4 That doesn't sound bad.
And Amy still wasn't playable in the main classic games either. Sonic The Fighters and Sonic R where the only times you could use her, and those still weren't mainline games.
Amy you could justify as she was at least around in the classic era, even if she wasn't playable in a main game. But yea, Blaze wouldn't fit. Shes' a modern character and Mania is strictly more engaged in the classic aesthetic and setting.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.Which is also why Mighty and Ray are there. Because if this were a modern game, they wouldn't fit. Not without major revamps for both of them.
If Mania is indeed the newly branded subseries for Sonic, I can definitely see that character use going something like this:
Mania Exclusive: Hooligans, Ray, Mighty, Hardboiled Heavies
Modern Exclusive: Team Dark, Cream, Big, Blaze, Silver
Both (albeit with different art styles): Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Eggman, Chaotix, Metal Sonic

I wouldn't mind seeing Classic counterparts to some of the Modern characters. I don't know why everyone always assumes they'd put them in a classic game exactly as they are, with no alterations to their design.
Of course, they can always create brand new characters too.
I doubt they would put any modern characters in the Mania sub-series as that would kind of defeat the purpose of it being a celebration of that era. Ideally, there should be one unified form of Sonic, but that ship has sailed, so here we are...

Sonic R sequel!? More Sonic Mania content!? 4-player Classic-style local co-op. There is a god.
Looks like nostalgia, common sense, and safe financial decisions finally won out. I was worried Mania was going to be the last of Classic-style Sonic anything.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!why does everyone think its a new sonic r thats clearly the all stars racing logo its not even darkened right xd
" I did the right thing, didn't I? It all worked out in the end." "In the end? Nothing ends, Adrian. Nothing ever ends."People just want to feel the sunshine.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?Deep down everybody, and I mean everybody is supersonic racing.
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.Everybody?
Not me. And that's a fact.
I agree that it clearly says "Racing" but the Rs◊ match.
This song needs more love.Look, that R takes back in time into another world when games were simple. Stop ruining this nostalgia for me.
But seriously - I'd hope this is a Racing game with something a little different than just "sports car/hovercraft/submersible"... because as cool as that sh't is, there needs to be an updated Sonic R where you can just run as Sonic.
That really shouldn't be too hard given what Sonic Unleashed and Transformed have shown us.
Or do what Riders did and let Sonic run as an option. I felt like a goddanged stallion winning races on foot.
Sonic is one of the few franchises where you can really get inventive with a racing title. It would be a waste to just have another cookie-cutter racing title. How many Sega characters are even left to throw into a Transformed sequel? They got to do something more with this.
