I think at this point, Sonic Team feels like they can get away with any dumb mechanics they come up with as long as the aesthetics are like the classic games.
Thankfully they're not doing anything more than supervise Mania, but making it a mini-Generations leaves a lot to be desired.
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page. For me it depends on what levels they use. Ice Cap and the pyramid levels from 3 and Knuckles would rock! So would Hill Top Zone, Wing Fortress Zone, Marble Zone or Star Light Zone. Some of the lesser-known Zones XD As long as we don't get 20 Green Hill Zones I think it'll be fine.

The Protomen enhanced my life.I doubt we'll get Ice Cap because of the whole music issue (unless they give us a new track).
What is Brad Buxer doing anyway? What's stopping Sega from just walking up to him and asking, "Hey, can we use Ice Cap?"
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page.Unless they're also remaking game-gear levels, there is only ONE classic Green Hill...and a retread.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.I for one would love to see more Game Gear zones make a comeback.
The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls!More remixed levels...ugh why? I hate how devs are banking too much on nostalgia.
I've seen it argued that with the spot Sonic's in remixing old levels for a 2D game is probably the best move. I don't know if I can disagree.
Well, Whitehead has responded to the backlash, and he did give the expected reason: that as part of the 25th anniversary, they want to celebrate the classic games.
On the bright side, the game will be longer than Generations. Not that that's hard to accomplish, but still.
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page.Maybe we could instead get the Sonic and Knuckles Collection Ice Cap music should they bring back Ice Cap?
Or remix the SA 1 Ice Cap music track?
You know, I have to wonder why Pit is obsessed with this site. It’s gonna ruin his life!I give it three days before someone speed runs the game in an hour.
As for the classic levels, it is pretty lame. Not every anniversary game needs to have classic levels and it almost seems like there is no confidence in the game itself and has to rely on the original three games.

This song needs more love. It's not lame, "per se", but yeah, it's a sign of mistrust on Modern Sonic.
The sad part is that while Sonic Team does have confidence in their ability to introduce new mechanics, no matter how well they mesh with the series' foundations, they assume that they have to recycle the aesthetics of the classic games to make them work.
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page.An hour is an okay speedrun time. SA1 is like 30 minutes for just Sonic's story, I can't remember the number for SA2 but I think it's an hour and a half for doing all stories, and even '06 is like 50 minutes for Sonic's story.
Then again, these times are after years of optimization and abusing lots of glitches.

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?I can valid points in both sides of the argument.
Reusing Classic levels presents familiar environments that devs can re-use, and even expand upon with their own ideas. Plus seeing a near-identical or completely identical level than one before is pretty underwhelming in a lot of cases, because then you could always have just re-used the previous level (like Emerald Hill looking a LOT like Green Hill).
But on the other hand, Sonic is a level about exploration and traversing new environments at sonic speeds, and seeing the same old place show up again won't provide that same level of interest than a new place to explore (like said Green Hill, since it's been used so many times). Besides, there's some places people won't want to revisit (like, just as an example, Labyrinth Zone).
I do writing, feel free to check out my stories here! https://numbugwritingblog.tumblr.com/post/686233243868102656/numbugs-shared-heroic-uniDoes anyone know of any other games like the 3D Sonics? The only one I can find that's vaguely similar is Cloudbuilt.
Slower-paced, with parkour would be something like Mirror's Edge. Warning: can cause motion sickness.
The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls!Mirror's edge is a lot of fun, and I've got a stomach of steel. Does Origin ever have sales? I might pick up Catalyst if it goes on sale.
The other problem is that the classics are also held in high regard by a very loud and vocal portion of the fandom.
You know, I have to wonder why Pit is obsessed with this site. It’s gonna ruin his life!Eh. I'm okay with there being more classic levels than new ones right now. They've shown through the initial demo that they're willing to seriously mess with the level design of the classics to make them distinct while still keeping what made them recognizable intact. I do hope that there's more than 2 or 3 completely new zones, though.
Lampshade Hanging: It's a lifestyle.Well that's a conversation. Why is that a bad thing?
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!It's not necessarily a bad thing, but as SEGA realizes this, and fans know SEGA realizes this, and with everything leading to the reveal of both Mania and 2017, some fans are concluding that they're giving Classic Sonic priority over Modern. Usually the same people that are tired of all the (perceived) Classic pandering that's been going on.
Not many people here know Japanese, I'd wager.
De Romanīs, lingua Latina gloriosa non fuī.
Erm, oops.
As for me, I feel as though that this direction is misguided but perhaps to be expected.
