I just recently tried putting on tefillin again.

Personally, I consider it one of the most frustrating mitzvot for me to perform from a sensory standpoint.

Hyperbolically speaking, I want to punch whoever thought it was a good idea to make men wrap a leather strap and an uncomfortable leather box around their arm in the face, and I envy the people who actually enjoy performing that mitzvah.

To add insult to injury, my tefillin are worn out, and likely unusable now.

I am disheartened by how many people are using the current conflict between Hamas and the IDF as an excuse to harass Jews and express Jew-Hatred, even going so far as to target Jews who are not actually Zionists.

The Israeli government and military has its share of misdeeds, sure. The Israeli populace is one of its own government's and military's biggest critics. Last I checked, you can say whatever you want in Israel about the government and military.

Then you have Hamas, an organization which wishes to kill every last Israeli, Jews especially but also Arabs. They use human shields. They fire from civilian areas. Within Gaza, you can't badmouth Hamas.

If you stand with Hamas, you do not stand with the Palestinian populace. You stand with a band of tyrants who are no better than they claim the Israelis are. If you truly cared about the people of Gaza, you would not allow their own Government to oppress them and use them as human shields.

I think the situation is more complex than the Israel are the new Nazis thing I have seen in many places. And it's because of really extreme rhetoric that has caused many people to hate Jewish people.

At the risk of engaging in "respectability politics" and "internalized categorism", I feel like I hold people who worship the same G-d I do (i.e. any Abrahamic practitioner, such as Muslims or to certain extent Christians)—especially my fellow Jews—to a higher standard than I might hold, say, a Right-Wing Atheist.

Am I wrong to do so?

I certainly see no reason not to hold my own demographic to a higher standard, given that I view our people as having certain responsibilities in the world.

So, I was taking a look on the website of a Glatt Kosher Supermarket in Brooklyn, NY, USA, called "Avi Glatt" (I live in Canada, so they can't ship to me) which appears to sell hindquarter cuts. Hindquarter cuts, when Kosher, undergo a process called "Nikkur", whereby they remove the sciatic nerve and some prohibited fats.

It appears that for some reason, despite the extra processing involved in hindquarter cuts, that what seems to be a New York Strip is the same price per pound as Chuck Steak, while what appears to be a Filet Mignon goes for the same price per pound as what is definitely a pound of Bone-In Rib Steak.

There is also Kosher Steakhouse and Butcher called "Bakar" which sells a few hindquarter cuts themselves.

Through their Butcher-Shop, they evidently sell fresh "Club Steak" (which I presume to be NY Strip) for a whole $4 less per Lb than Rib and Ribeye Steaks respectively.

Based on what I've looked up, price comparisons are allegedly similar with Treyf (non-Kosher) cuts.

I would think that the extra effort involved would make hindquarter cuts more expensive if Kosher, but it appears not.

I had a bat mitzvah when I was younger, and then I went to Dave & Buster's. Was a fun day.

Do non-practicing Jews count?

I figured as much. My mom always says that if your mother was a Jew, you're a Jew, practicing or otherwise. I think my great-great-grandma's side of the family were Ashkenazi if their surname was anything to go by.

Having now watched a video by Muhammad Zoabi about identity politics, can I just say something?

Muhammad, as an Israeli Arab, has called people out for referring to him as "Palestinian" because he doesn't identify as such.

Similarly, being an Ashkenazic Jew with Shoah survivorship on my dad's side, I don't identify as white.

Many Mizrahim do not identify as "Arab", partially due to things like the Farhud and attacks in the British Mandate.

It's one thing for certain identities to only apply to people affiliated with a demographic.

It's another thing entirely to force people into an ethnic identity that they refuse to associate with by labeling them a particular way against their will.

If you would respect the identity of a trans person, respect people's ethnic identities.

This includes people of your own demographic.

On a lighter note, I met up with my girlfriend for Simchat Torah. I got along well with her community. I look forward to her coming over to where I live.

For the first time in a while, I put on Tefillin on Sunday. I may keep trying to do it.

As noted in a different thread, 3D printing a menorah will not work out at this time.
