I'm working on a fantasy novel and at the beggining I made it so it would be like a real life medeivil kingdom-no magic, dragons, ect. But there is a book that was written centuries ago that spoke of the first settlers using magic and dragons, but the scientific community passed it off as just old legends. Then when the main characters really get into the action, they learn it's real,it was just hidden away and there are only a few left who have the ability to use magic.

So really,I put spoilers at the beggining of the story. They just don't know it's spoilers. Is that a good idea? Or did I mess up?

Looks like a fairly standard Chekhov's Gun. (So standard as to be noticable to Genre Savvy readers)

Da Rules excuse all the inaccuracy in the world. Listen to them, not me.

Seconding Yej here. The only question is whether you want it to be a Checkovs Gun or if you would rather go for a surprise.
