Subs for the second episode are out, and at this rate Freya doesn't stand a freaking chance.
Probably should have skipped the OP for this episode too, considering that it spoils the episode's outcome
Really don't care much for Hayate
The emphasis on human subspecies is interesting
I mostly like the ED, but the backgrounds are a bit too obviously photos run through a few filters
I bet Ernest Johnson can truly be rated M. Also, he somehow reminds me of Wolverine... Must be those hot-blooded sideburns. ● Yeah, right, no additional security checkpoint before maintenance area for those extremely valuable planes. Anyone already inside Elysion can just wander into the 'hangars'. ● I don't you think you are supposed to "ride the wind" literally, Mr. Immelman. ● Did I see that right, the Walkuries have invisibility cloaks?
P.S. Those girls must have some very dexterous fingers. I for one can't make a clear W on just one hand (maybe cause I'm male?)... Wonder how they train to achieve that?..
Holosuits. They've been a thing since Frontier.
The fourth doesn't actually seem to have been present but projected remotely after the reveal rather than being outright invisible. She seems to be a little transparent compared to the rest of the team.
Meanwhile, do we have any word on Mirage's parentage? Because I was just mentally running the numbers and it's quite possible for her to be Max and Miria's granddaughter given their first daughter was born in 2010-2011. But it's also just the right side of plausible (assuming that Miria went through a very late menopause... assuming full Meltandi even do go through menopause) that she could actually by Mylene's younger sister.
And that's not even considering the fact that they have at least one adopted daughter as well.
So... there's way more singing/dancing/magical girling in Macross than I remember.
This series does seem to be putting more focus on the idols than usual.
Then again, Macross 7 did the same with Fire Bomber.
As a side note, those mercats are the most adorable things ever.

So which girl in that pic of the family is Mirage's mother?

The pig-tailed one with brown hair, I think.
That was my guess, the genetics in that family must be wacky if one girl has brown hair and another has pink hair.
I'm guessing one of them is the adopted sister, but who knows.

they're half-Zentradi, half-human and you worry about hair colours?
No, Moaramia isn't present in that picture. I think it was taken before she was adopted.
That's just Milia, Max, and their seven biological daughters (I think, in order: Komilia, Miracle, Muse, Therese, Emilia, Miranda, and Mylene).

Hey, to be fair I'm new to Macross, I dunno how the races work at all.
Short version: A long time a go in a galaxy... quite close by, there was a race known as the Protoculture. They did a lot of tinkering with a variety of life forms around the galaxy, humans included. The end result of this is this was the Zentradi, a race of giant super-soldiers that, when shrunk down to human size, are quite capable of interbreeding with humans, but because of their more extensive genetic tinkering, they tend to come in a greater variety of colourations.
Some of them have green or greenish skin for example (depending on the art director), as well as a variety of hair colours outside the range of human norms, as well as a couple of other traits that can crop up such as a mild case of prehensile, or at least voluntarily motile, hair.
Also, they have super-toughness.
Which can be passed down to their offsprings with other races humans. Ranka Lee (Macross Frontier) is a quarter zentredi, but still tough enough to survive getting spaced for a few seconds.
Getting spaced for a few seconds is not actually that harmful, a human could survive that period without any trouble.
15 seconds will knock you out, 30 seconds is about the point where its seriously harmful, 90 seconds is guaranteed lethal.
At most she might need to see a doctor to see if she needs a few meds for radiation exposure, which she does go see that doctor.

Ranka had Zentradi blood, so she could withstand a short exposure to space last season.
The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls!Zentradi also have a genetic failsafe that was intended to keep them from going rogue (it didn't work, which is why the Protoculture ain't around anymore): They freak the hell out when exposed to non-military cultural elements. The first few times they encounter things like "men and women in the same place" or "toys" or whatever, they freeze up entirely from culture shock. They get over it after repeated exposure, but will still get really excited about artistic culture, especially music. They're a spacegoing race of giant warrior fanboys and girls.
The first time humans and Zentradi met, there was a war that wiped out almost the entire human race. At the critical moment, a significant number of Zentradi defected to the human side, and their combined fleet launched a simultaneous attack/idol concert and defeated those that did not, thus ensuring that the civilizations in the Macross universe will remain forever idol-obsessed.
I haven't seen any of the previous series but I'm enjoying this thus far. The final audition was a dick move though and I don't like that they didn't get called out on it.
My point was she didn't need to be part Zentradi to walk away from that at all.

A dick move? They needed to see how she would react to a life-and-death situation. Walkure isn't a normal idol group, they're people who go straight into combat situations with crazy berserkers. They see a hell of a lot worse than that on practically a daily basis.
Actually, one thing I am impressed about with episode two.
We got through the entire audition process without hearing a single bit of "My Boyfriend's a Pilot".
I know that given that it was Minmei's debut single which means that it's going to be a big deal in universe, but on the whole it is over-used. And it's not even Minmei's best song.
I think that the secret audition was a mite less dickish because (a) they were recruiting for a combat post, and (b) they'd already seen her singing in the middle of a fairly apocalyptic battle, so there were decent odds she'd be able to handle the stress.
They weren't asking much more of her than she'd already done, and was applying to do sgain.

What's precedent ever done for us?They made her think she failed and that she was going to die. Recruitment for a combat position or not, in what world would that not be considered a dick move?
Someone mentioned that Ikenai Borderline has very Ricky Martin-esque trumpets in it and I cannot unhear that
