Well, Satoshi Tajiri himself that Pokemon Special was "The closest thing to the world I was trying to concieve". So actually basing the teams on the Manga would be more close to the source material (the games) than the anime.
But each to his own I guess.

I don't care for the manga. As such, I'm not going to use it as inspiration. When I was making the teams, priority was Games, then Anime. I was planning on making May's team basically Red's (starters and gifts) with Hoenn Pokemon, but I thought that made her too similar to Professor Birch, so I went to the anime instead (although now that I think about it, his team may have been different in the actual battle).

I think the similarities with May's team were when I was drawing from her rival set as inspiration. So...let's stick with the original plan, then.

I agree with the sentiment, Fool, but it's not as much an important thing now if, hey, we are gonna at least have Tropius for a sort of cameo... Wolf did justify himself with the matter of familiarity which is important if he is gonna GM this section, but let's hope you don't let it get over your head Wolf... I mean, one thing is "I don't care for the manga" (I do that with the anime myself, but not because I don't know it), but from there to not acknowledge it as a source there's a step... Oh well this is still a multi...cultural...universal...thingy? of an RP so I'll settle with what we can have.

Wait...Wynaut isn't unique. I based that on Bulbapedia's Gift Pokemon page, but apparently you get an egg for a Pokemon that is common as dirt. Is there any other Pokemon in Hoenn that you can only get one of?

The fossils, the starter and Castform are the only ones I can think of in a first run. One could kinda stretch it with Zangoose/Seviper and Lunatone/Solrock, which are pairs of unique species per version...

Choosing between fossils is a pain. I would suggest Milotic, since they're so annoyingly difficult to get, but we've already seen a bunch.
