Rose: I've only been here a few days myself.

Scarlette: I've been around for... a few months, I guess?

Isbrand: <Pray tell, what variety of strange contraption is this?>

Zeal: Wait, hold on!

-Zeal goes to his backpack on the ground. He opens a notebook and clicks a pen.-

First question, where are the best places to swim?

Scarlette: Uh, well... there's the Hau'oli beachfront, over that way—

-She points toward the east end of the city-

Scarlette: —and then there's the beach on Route 1 outside of the professor's lab, then if you can manage to get there, there's Kala'e Bay on the other side of the island. But, uh, the closest is here in Hau'oli.

-Zeal writes this down.-

Zeal: Mhmm, I see.

Next question, have you seen any of the following recently: a Quilava, a Sneasel, a Staraptor, a Vanilluxe, an Electabuzz, a Magcargo, a Misdreavus, a Scolipede, a man with blue hair, probably wearing sunglasses and a trenchcoat, or a man with a plain white featureless mask?

Lanie: Um...

Scarlette: ...I think there might be Misdreavus at the cemetery up north?

Rose: I'm gonna guess you're not just talking about any old wild Misdreavus.

-Lanie shakes her head.-

Lanie: She was taken from me.

Scarlette: O-oh, um...

Rose: I see...

Scarlette: I, um, I'm sorry to hear that.

Yeah, glad that hasn't happened to me yet, I was actually planning on getting my mons registered as Ride Pokémon once I get over to Hau'oli City.

Shaun: "It's called a Pokedex. It's like an encycopedia of Pokemon. I was wondering if I could scan you to add your variety of Vulpix to my Pokedex."

Zeal: It'd be really convenient if we could just find everyone all at once. But the world seems intent on making things less convenient. When I started it was just Fajro, but now everyone's gone.

...Er, well, just...

-He points to his working eye.-

Rose: Oh, sure. Lemme get your numbers real quick and I'll give you a call if something comes up.

Scarlette: Right, uh, hold on, I'll get my phone as well.

-They dig their phones out of their bags.-

-Diane sighs-

Diane: ...I think I need a break from all this. Away from where everyone else seems to be going, in Alola. Maybe I should head back to PEFE for a while, I haven't particularly done anything for that in a long time.

Skye: Didn't Echo say something about being interested in working there as well?

-Lanie grabs her new phone from the pocket of the sweatshirt she's taken off and was sitting on and holds it out.-

Lanie: Here's mine.

Zeal: Oh, just a sec!

-He goes to his bag again, and pulls out a phone.-

Here it is! My phone! That is exactly what this is! It won't shock you if you touch it, trust me!

-He holds it out in front of him with both arms fully extended.-

Rose: Uh, okay.

-While Scarlette trades phone numbers with Lanie first, Rose hesitantly takes Zeal's phone, cautious to trust that it is indeed a phone and that it won't shock her when she touches it.-

Zeal: I was hoping for a better reaction...

Lanie: Oh, by the way, do you know how the Island Challenge works? I saw something about it in one of the brochures.

You sure? Well, if that's what you want to do, that's fine. PEFE HQ is definitely pretty good for getting away from it all if you don't want to go on some mountain trip, and you wouldn't miss out on seeing Alolan mons, since we have those.

Bureau Attendant: -and finally off to the east of Hau'oli city you can find even more wonderful beaches, the pathway up to the rustic Iki Town and Ten Carat Hill! Be advised though that access to the interior of Ten Carat Hill is restricted to local residents of Melemele Island, Verdant Cavern is restricted to Island Challenge participants only and the ruins behind Iki Town are currently inaccessible due to a recent bridge collapse.

-Pent nods along and just sorta glances aside before shrugging-

So is there anything actually interesting around?

Bureau Attendant: Uh... Like what sir?

The usual, Alkagross ruins, mysterious shipwrecks, the local headquarters of whatever evil Team is threatening to destroy the world this year...

Bureau Attendant: No, no and we have a local Team but they're far from threatening.

Well what is there to do in Alola then?

Bureau Attendant: Well I'm unsure whether the Kahunas have opened places in the Challenge to trainers of your age yet, but what you can do is Poke Finder!

-Pent's just sorta got a look of confusion as he slips a pamphlet on local Melemele Island species into his pocket-

Bureau Attendant: Poke Finder is a tourist initiative started a few months ago, tourists and locals alike are encouraged to take pictures of Alola's unique landscapes, flora and Pokemon and share them with the world! Normally this service is only open to people possessing a Rotomdex but due to increased demand and a generous donation from the PEFE we have been able to obtain a supply of last-generation digital cameras retrofitted to work with the Poke Finder network. Would you like to participate sir?

I don't see why not. Uh... Can I have two? I think I know someone else travelling with me that'd be interested in this too.

Bureau Attendant: Certainly sir. For people requiring a camera and not participating in the Island Challenge small deposit of $50 per camera is required and will be refunded on return of the camera at the end of your trip.

-Pent is fine with that and hands over the money before taking the two cameras and putting both in his bag-

(She strikes an over-the-top pose, as though she somehow believes such theatrics are necessary for the Pokedex to work.)

Scarlette: Oh, sure, I do know about that. See, the Kahunas of each island are in charge of setting trainers up for the island challenge, and they just started opening it up to not only a foreign crowd, but older than the previous 11-year-old restrictions. If you want to see about starting an island challenge here in Alola, you'll want to talk to Hala in Iki Town.

Rose: We just started our own island challenges, so, y'know.

Resort Area — Past

Diane: ...Come to think of it, a mountain trip sounds nice as well, but after that, definitely headed to PEFE HQ.

Skye: I'll see if she wants to come along with us and Alyssa, then. On, uh, either the mountain trip or to PEFE.

-Lanie tilts her head.-

Lanie: I really, really want to, but... Espero's all I have left.

-The Munna briefly bounces upward and nods.-

Shaun stifled a laugh. "Thanks." He tapped a button on the Pokedex and scanned Isbrand.

Shaun: "There, all done."

He looked at the two males in front of him. "Well, we should get back to our hotel. It was nice meeting you." He picked Jessica of the ground and held her in his arms, savoring her warmth.

(He bends down to scritch Jessica's ear.)

Scarlette: Well, uh, we're supposed to look for Ilima, the Trial Captain here in Hau'oli, but, er...

Rose: We've got no idea where to look for him.

Route 1

Ever: ...You can get them registered?

Shaun: "Come on, Jasper. I'm just asking you to be civil towards everyone. I don't even want you to be friendly anyomore; I just want you to tolerate us."

Jasper: "Hmph! Why should I? I didn't even want to leave Sunnyshore, let alone Sinnoh!"

Shaun: "Look, my dad entrusted me with your safety. My other Mons and I have bonded and all get along, so why can't you?"

Jasper: "Why should I trust you? All I need to do is look out for myself. You can't rely on anyone but yourself."

Shaun: "Yet my Mons and I rely on each other, and it makes us stronger! You know what? It's late. I'll just let you think about this conversation. Good night."

He lied down in bed, too tired and frusturated to even return Jasper to his Pokeball.

How have they been so successful? They all rely on each other, yet they've still gotten this far. Maybe he's right.
