Asking on behalf of my roommate, since I know we have some politically-aware people in here:

Does the US government or military ever hire foreigners who are looking to gain US citizenship? Specifically translators; she's finishing up her Master's in Arabic/English Translation With Interpreting, which is something you'd think there'd be a large call for with how much we do in the middle east, but the fact that she's not American (or British for that matter, she's Egyptian) might work against her. Any tips?

I'm really hoping to find her something to do in the UK or the US (she wants to return to the US, she was there on a student visa years ago), especially now that it's so... chaotic in Egypt.

Well since you mention the UK while leaving it out of the title, in order of diminishing certainty:

In the UK, you'd be looking at a civil servant job in the Foreign Office or Ministry of Defence foremost, I would guess, and I believe these require you to be a British citizen.

The best bet for avoiding such a requirement, if I had to put money on it, would be an international body or a corporation outside but with that, the chances of the job actually wanting you in the US rather than in an Arabic speaking country where they'd need you, would be lower.

Probably redundant advice: Try the UN.

Aren't most interpreters freelance?

As an Arabic Translator, there's plenty of places in the State Department or Do D that would take here in the US.
