well, it serves its purpose as a way into oolacile, i was more interested in why manus cares about it so much.

As I recall it was a different pendant that granted access to Oolacile.

I also like that idea of Chester being from Yharnam, and it would be fun to see Ornstein in Bloodborne, but as far as I know there is no connection between the two games (but I have heard... suggestions, and have not yet finished Bloodborne and heard all that it has to tell), and overall consider it unlikely.

no, its the same pendant that grants access to oolacile. you get it from the crystal golem in dukes archive, and when you bring it to darkroot basin manus's manos drags you through the portal.

The pendant you get at the beginning =/= the pendant that Manus was looking for.

Manus wanted that pendant. It was his pendant. That's why he reached through time to get it and engulfed Oolacile in the Abyss. Someone unearthed his corpse and stole the pendant, so he got angry.

The Age of Dark is what will come when the First Flame stops burning. The Abyss coming to eat your city is what happens when you overuse the power of Humanity. They're not connected.

cuz i completely forgot that existed.

This is the pendant you can choose as a starting gift and serves no purpose. This is a separate item, and is the pendant that is dropped by the golem in the Archives and grants access to Oolacile.

Manus was corrupted into that thing "after his humanity went wild". Ergo, the Abyss was spawned from his humanity. You also fight Humanity Phantoms in the Abyss. The link between the Abyss and Humanity is pretty obvious. Now, take a look at the description of Pursuers. "Grant a fleeting will to the Dark of humanity, and volley the result." Note the capital "D." Dark is Humanity, Humanity is what created the Abyss, and two things that are equal to the same thing are equal to each other. Dark=Humanity=Abyss, meaning Dark=Abyss. So Oolacile is an example of what awaits in The Age of Dark.

Ninja'd while I was typing my previous post. I forgot which pedant, broken or not, was the one you can get as a starting gift and which got you to Oolacile. I thought you were saying that the starting gift pendant was the one that opened Oolacile.

You somehow jump from "Abyss is related to Humanity" (which I already said) to "The Age of Dark is the Abyss". Humanity is the Dark Soul, so yes, Abyss, Darkness and Humanity are related.

The Age of Dark is defined as the Age that will come once the Age of Fire ends, when the First Flame stops burning. It has nothing to do with Humanity or the Abyss (except that the word "Dark" is relevant for both the Age and the Abyss). If anything, it'll be more similar to the Age of Ancients, when the dragons ruled before people found the First Flame.

I mean, I guess, because nobody says anything about what will happen during the Age of Dark. Kaathe says New Londo misused the power of Humanity and that's why the Abyss came and corrupted the Kings. Same goes for Oolacile.

Age Dark. Dark of Humanity. Humanity spawns the Abyss.

Age of the thing that spawns the Abyss.

Or, as I see it, the Abyss is made out of Manus' wild humanity.

So Age of the thing that is the Abyss.

Let that sink in. Because neither option is good.

And on top of that, Kaathe is the one who wants you to do that. Kaathe. Four Kings Kaathe. Darkwraiths Kaathe. Potentially Oolacile Kaathe (could have been Frampt, but which of them is more likely, given Kaathe's connection to the Abyss?). Darkness, death, and humans perverted into monsters is his M.O.

If you don't agree with me, that's fine. But Kaathe has a track record that's worse than Frampt's. Lies vs. Lies, mass murder by proxy, and making large areas completely uninhabitable.

I edited this into my post before you posted:

Kaathe says New Londo misused the power of Humanity and that's why the Abyss came and corrupted the Kings.

Kaathe didn't want the Abyss coming. What happened to New Londo was a mistake. Kaathe wanted to let humans unlock the power of Humanity. Humans fucked up and abused it and shit happened. Twice.

The Age of Dark is maybe about using Humanity and whatever powers it could have, but making the Abyss swallow everything isn't the plan.

He didn't make them, he just gave them the power they overused.

He hands it out to you because you kicked the Four Kings' butt back into the Abyss so he's pretty sure you can handle it.

He's irresponsible, but spreading the Abyss isn't his goal. It's more like a collateral damage of his activities.

Collateral Damage isn't a defense. If it happened in Oolacile, and that was the only time, I'd say "'Kay, you fucked up once. Shame on you." But he handed it to the four kings, as well. He did it again.

So, we've got two things we can ascribe this to. A) Malice, or B) Egregious levels of sheer stupidity.

If it's malice, I'm not leaving the fate of the world in his... coils, I guess.

If it's stupidity, I'm definitely not leaving the fate of the world in his coils, moustache, or whatever the fuck he'd hold it in.

And on top of that, he actively sells tools that exist for the sole purpose of entering another world to kill someone and steal their humanity, so even if he's just stupid, he's still malicious.

He's bad. Period. No two ways about it.

Also, maybe he didn't turn them into what they've become, but he definitely intends them to work the way they do, given that his covenant is called the Dark Wraiths.

it's never specified what serpent brought the abyss to oolacile. most people assume it's kaathe but i'd like to point out that chester's line makes it ambiguous and we already know there are more of them besides kaathe and frampt.

A defense from what? All I'm saying is that the Age of Dark isn't about bringing the Abyss. I'm not defending anyone. Just exposing why "Age of Dark" doesn't mean "Abyss for Everyone".

[up][up]And much like anything adorable in Dark Souls, they'll completely fuck you up if you look the wrong way at them. For such an ineffectual-looking attack animation, the Mushroom Parents pack a mean punch.

you can skip the taurus demon actually. you can make your way to valley of drakes from new londo as soon as you get to firelink shinre, get to darkroot forest, and from there the parish/burg where you can find solaire and get the soapstones for co-op. of course though you need the master key.

He's evil, but he's honest. He warns you about what could happen. And he has no reason to lie to you. Whatever happens to you, whatever you screw up, whatever you don't do right, he'll live and wait for someone else to come across and accept his offer again. He's got a schedule, but the Abyss isn't part of it. Or else he wouldn't give the key to opening the gates to the Abyss again to you, the only person alive who was able to stop the Abyss, put its "Father" to rest and then walked into it to beat the shit out of one of its most powerful creations.

Saying that the Age of Dark is about bringing the Abyss because "there's Dark in Age of Dark and the Abyss has to do with Darkness" doesn't really hold up. By that reasoning you could say that the Lords's plan was to bring the Abyss because the opening says "Then, from the Dark, They came. And found the Souls of Lords within the flame", so they came from the Dark, so surely they want to come back to it. Or that the First Flame is actually what will bring the Abyss because the opening says "But then there was Fire. And with Fire came Disparity. Heat and cold, life and death, and of course... Light and Dark.". Or that undead come from the Abyss because what turns them Undead is the Darksign.
