Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

I've gotten the Spider-Island and Spider-Verse bundles from comixology. The former had the core storyline and most tie-ins in release order, which resulted in some events being revealed in tie insurance before they happened in the main series. Verse just had the main story followed by each tie-in.

Not sure which is more common but I haven't gotten anything out of order through them.

Spider-Island was the one where I noticed it most. Like, Peter's big speech is in the background of a small panel before the issue where he actually does it, it's just incredibly jarring.

Damn it, I got the trades because I thought that'd be the best way to read it. It's jumpy as fuck and I kind of regret buying these if I could do better with Marvel Unlimited (currently subbed) and a reading guide.

The "special artist" 1:1000 variant cover for the new Venom series has turned out to just be a recolor of Venom's first appearance at the end of ASM #299.

On one hand, I'm glad the drive to Starr's country estate didn't take a week, on the other hand, I'm kind of bummed at them wasting a potentially awesome notion like Peter and Scott Lang stuck in a car for ages

Does anyone else hate how Marvel over exaggerates high school Spider-man?

Peter was only in high school for 28 issues.

I hate how it's treated as a magic golden era for the character.

I think the fact that he was only there for 28 issues is why it's treated as a magic golden era for the character. It's a period of his history that hasn't been thoroughly covered by the source material already, which is surprising given that what really made his name was being a Kid Hero instead of a Kid Sidekick to an existing superhero.

So there's this double whammy of "iconic" Spider-Man being a Robin or Bucky who doesn't play second-fiddle to a pre-established hero mixed with the fact that there aren't fifty million comics already set in that point of the character's history.

[up][up] Absolutely. Abso-fucking-lutely. The fact that adaptations try to stick way more into high school just drives me nuts.

I get the argument that the source material didn't cover it that thoroughly, but I would only buy that if it meant adaptations just spent longer in high school before moving on. But many of them just leave him there.

I do wonder if Ultimate Pete would have ever graduated if he hadn't been killed off. What Could Have Been.

Personally for me what made Spider-man interesting was that the character evolved. He went from high school to college. He got married.

The more that Marvel tries to make him young the less interesting the character and the stories become.

It always bugs me that they go for high school Spider-Man, but go for his college love interests.

In all fairness, the nineties' animated series made a point of always using a college aged Peter, and the Raimi films had him graduating high school before the first movie was halfway over.

[up] Which is even more telling - college wasn't just the real "golden era" that so many writers are supposedly chasing, it was the setting for two of the most successful Spider-Man adaptations.

Hey, Web Warriors ended!

....

What, nothing?

Hey, I got something! It shows that Ultimate Jess is alive! That's like the most relevant thing to come from it.

You know what would have kept Web Warriors alive longer? Peni Parker.

Marvel should give her a mini-series. Because man, that one-shot with her was amazing.

I also want an ongoing set in Lady Spider's reality. Marvel Steampunk! Come on!

So in the newspapers, we're getting another "totally tiny adventure". Egghead has gotten his hands on Pymtech here (what a coincidence, as he's done the same in the main continuity recently) and subjects Peter and Scott to a gas which shrinks them down. The gas also somehow prevents Scott from controlling his size. Starr then sets upon the two of them with a vacuum cleaner.

I agree with Tiamatty, but it also makes me curious: how old is she, anyway? I have her mentally pegged at 16 or 17 but isn't she moved out of her dad's house and living with roomies? That would put her around college-age.
