Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

Spider-Man owning his own country might just be the gimmick storyline Editorial needs to keep up the illusion.

A new event called Spider-Island but it’s about Spider-Man being left an island nation in some weirdo’s will and it turns out the Jackal has turned the populace into spider powered people for some damn reason

No no no, it needs to be more stupid and gimmicky to attract new audiences with hate reads.

"New Spider-york city! That's right true believers, Spider-Man has been officially declared mayor of New York in a mysterious series of events! Read on to find out how this happened, but we'll start out 7 months after the election to totally disorientate you. The other heroes aren't at all thrilled at Spider-Man's newfound authority and are looking to bring him down by any means necessary! Will Spider-Man's political ambitions spin out of his control? Or will he weave a web to entrap the other Avengers before they can cancel this friendly neighborhood mayor? Aunt May is now dating Paul, Mary Jane is now Chasm, Ben Reilly has assumed the identity of Peter, Doc Ock is the vice mayor, Kingpin runs the daily bugle, and Jameson is now the new Green Goblin."

"Also Spider-Man has a harem for some reason, but he keeps disappointing them."

Boomerang is the municipal ombudsman. In the time it took for you to read this post, he has already embezzled millions from the city budget, and is now attempting to flee to Madripoor, with Mayor Spider-Man in hot pursuit.

Hmmmmm.... I like the ideas here, but we also need stupid shit for Spider-Man to do and make him look as pathetic as possible to make him relatable.

Uhhhhhh...Spider-Man loses his costume and underwear but not mask in the middle of a press conference.

And somehow getting soup kitchens across New York closed down.

New interview with JMD confirms that the Peter narrating "Shadow of the Green Goblin" is Long retired as Spider-Man, is happily married, has kids. At the time of the interview he also says he'd just worked out what this Peter was up to that prompted him to start narrating the story but doesn't want to spoil it

[up] Every mini JMD has done has been set in 616

Just because Marvel won't let Peter get married in an eternal present doesn't mean he won't be allowed to ever have a happy ending in an unreachable future

While the JMD minis are ostensibly set in 616, JMD himself has been frank about how he's functionally treating them like their own continuity as "what the comic would've been like if the morons in editorial didn't drag out the Clone Saga".

By the by, someone mentioned earlier how this run - this period in general - seems to be rehashing 80s/90s arcs a lot and that made me realize that's part of why I hate it so much. The 80s/90s are my absolute favorite era of Spider-Man; it has a lot of my favorite stories (Venom, Kraven's Last Hunt, Lifetheft, Captain Universe, Sin-Eater, Aunt May's death, even parts of the Clone Saga, etc.), introduced a lot of my favorite characters and concepts, and was generally peak Spidey writing imo. So for this run to constantly rehash some of the best stories of the series but with everything that made them great ripped out is infuriating and also shows how full of shit Spider-Editorial is about the high school/college years being "peak" because they have to lean on everything that came AFTER those years.

So from my topic in the Marvel Comics thread, I have to raise this question:

What exactly does Doc Ock want to achieve as a supervillain?

I've realized that this is part of why he's generally overshadowed by Venom and Green Goblin as part of the big three of Spider-Man villains, and Venom hasn't been a bad guy in decades.

Seriously, what are his goals right now?

I don't think Ock being overshadowed by the other two was a thing outside of the period where he literally died, and Norman was dead for twice as long. We were constantly getting Ock stories. He took over the main book. We couldn't get enough of the guy.

I mean, he does constantly show up, but is he as popular as Green Goblin and Venom?

Like, remember, Doc Ock's big victory of defeating Spider-Man was overshadowed by Venom's big debut. There's also the fact that Green Goblin generally has bigger stories than Doc Ock, like Dark Reign. Even Dan Slott used him as the final boss of his run.

Doc Ock has been overshadowed by Green Goblin in particular. Sure Doc Ock has more appearances but the Green Goblin is generally a bigger character and has the more iconic moments.

Heck, Hobgoblin overshadowed Doc Ock when the former was still a major villain.

I've realized a major problem with Doc Ock is that he really doesn't have consistent motivations while at Venom and Green Goblin do.

Its probably also a bit of Otto being fairly divorced from the Peter portion of Spidey while usually Venom and Gobbie have historically had more intersection with that side of Spider-Man's life as well, making it all seem that much more personal.

He still really wants to fuck Aunt May

They interacted with each other when Peter was in a coma for the Beyond arc and Doc Ock was so into her.
