Huh, I was wondering where the Elder Scrolls VI thread went.
Then I must be doing something wrong, because literally all I ever see between towns is rocks and trees. No matter where I go.
Do you use the compass and head towards those greyed out symbols? Which direction did you go in? Which towns have you seen so far? I know from Helgen to Riverwood there are 3 caves / mines you can visit. And if you head from Whiterun west, theres about 6 "locations" - caves, bandit camps, giant camps. And a fort!
So, unless your game is hella glitched, I suppose we should also ask what you mind by "discovering" things.
We've been over this with Twentington before. Either their game is bugged with some heretofore unheard of bug that removes every single point of interest on the map, or they have some weird unrealistic expectations of what is considered "content". Like, if you're not running into some super special event or last-boss-dungeon-like location every ten steps, it's an empty world.
Okay, I'm outside Whiterun. I have a dragonstone AND a claw to deliver. Now what?
Dragonstone - head into Whiterun, then to the Palace (Dragonsreach) - it's fairly self explanatory.
The claw is for Riverwood - if you talk to people there you'll easily find who wants it.
I meant after that. I'm kinda wide open with no guidance after those.
Go fight a giant
New theme music also a boxIf they're early level that's not very good advice, it's either an unfun slog or instant death.
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnAre there things that I'm missing? I found some Khajit outside Whiterun and they had nothing to say. I found a brewery that had nothing in it. It seems when I do find something, there's nothing in it at all
Try following your journal, if you pick up a quest (especially the Misc ones), it should send you to an area. From there, hunt around caves, dungeons, etc.

Think of it as an introduction to physics..
New theme music also a boxI don't think giants have anything to do with physics, they defy it regularly
(but yes saving and then getting killed by them can be an extremely amusing experience)

"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnIts an invaluable lesson that every players:Do not attack Giants
New theme music also a boxYou'll get some more main story quests after you turn in the Dragonstone.
Might want to stock up on arrows and make sure your archery skills are up to snuff before you do that though.

Huh, why?
An introduction to long range, basically.
The Khajiit are merchants but do feature in other quests. Whiterun has plenty of quests in it which will take you all over.
How do I know which quest to pick?
Whatever one sounds the most fun
New theme music also a boxPick all the quests. None get locked out by choosing one. Stack 'em high, go wandering!
Each one will take you further out which leads to more, which lead you further out. It's a cycle to encourage you to just cross the map discovering things and encountering enemies and little vignettes.
So what should I even go for?
Well if you want plot, go to the castle. That'll railroad you fairly well. Most other quests are side quests that are just to help you level and explore. The plot is pretty good at leading you by the nose if you just want direction.
And to a degree, the main plot is required. You do have to advance the main quest a bit to move further in the Civil War, and it is advisable to get Whirlwind Sprint, the full Unrelenting Force, and Dragonrend as well, since those will make your treasure-hunting a lot simpler.
Qui odoratus est qui fecit.Don't be afraid to talk to NP Cs and ask about their problems, there's usually a quest in it for you.
If I remember right, there's only two quests which lock you out of others, and you'll know them. (You cannot join both the Legion and the Stormcloaks.)
Yeah, that was my assumption. Original Skyrim ran just fine on Medium/High, and aside from my CPU speed I meet or exceed all the other reqs.
Granted, I need to find the time to DL and install the dozens of mods I will want.
