That being said, I could never understand it... I'm not so good at the ASCII.

That's what "k" is for. Not sure what something is? Press "k", cursor over it, and find out.
It becomes second nature in time.

If you're warping your mind enough to even understand a game like DF in the first place, you might as well go all the way and wrap your head around the ASCII graphics.
