It's one thing to make a spectacle. It's another to make a difference.Well Intelligent Systems seems to want to do something different (and extremely different for some reason). You wouldn't want to play the same game over and over, would you?
You got some dirt on you. Here's some more!Tell that to the people buying NSMBU and NSMB2.

It's one thing to make a spectacle. It's another to make a difference.I'd like the same battle system, so yes. I just want new ideas. Like how the first two games changed quite a bit from eachother.
Quest 64 threadSo you want change, but the changes aren't where you want them to be?
Fantastic Supreme Überkaiser Emperor Folt of The Infinity and Beyond" ... "The First"!I think it's better to think of Sticker Star as a Gaiden Game of sorts; something different just for this portable installment. They'll probably go back to the regular battle system for the inevitable Wii U Paper Mario RPG.

Eh.We'll see, but I'm a bit hesitant to refer to it as such, since only two games in the Paper Mario series are overly similiar to each other.
Fantastic Supreme Überkaiser Emperor Folt of The Infinity and Beyond" ... "The First"!I'm all for new ideas too, but I wouldn't mind them going back to a good thing. Having just one guy is boring in any RPG.
Indeed. And one of the things I've always liked about the series is the colorful personality your party members have. The first game was good about it, the second game was amazing about it, the third game was... OK about it, mostly where Peach and Bowser were concered (they got some good lines), but I felt the lack of real "partners" hurt it. Now, we've just got one silent party member and maybe one side chatterbox, and that feels a little barren and sad.
"Proto-Indo-European makes the damnedest words related. It's great. It's the Kevin Bacon of etymology." ~MadrugadaNah, not really. Technically, this battle system is pretty similar to the first two games' battle systems. It's turn based, Mario can use his Hammer and Jump. Badges and FP consumption got replaced by stickers. Partner attacks are still in, just in the form of stickers. Really, the one thing that makes this different, is that resource management is a big part of the game now.

You got some dirt on you. Here's some more!I still preferred the originals.
@Folt: Yeah, I didn't like the FP system or the battle system changed. I liked that platforming was major, though(In SPM). Albeit, I liked Super Paper Mario. But I find it more like a spin-off. Not that it is, of course. It just feels like one to me.
Quest 64 threadI think it's just more experimental than you'd like, actually. Kind of like how Birth By Sleep (or indeed, BBS, CoM, and 3D) can stand with their numbered brothers, but still not feel like a main game (though Birth By Sleep is actually referred to as Kingdom Hearts 0).

Fantastic Supreme Überkaiser Emperor Folt of The Infinity and Beyond" ... "The First"!Pretty much.
But yeah, I miss the partners as is. Removing them entirely pretty much screws with what made the Paper Mario series so awesome. Even SPM still had witty partners. A few of them are Pixls, but Bowser is just plain great.
Quest 64 threadI think we can agree that this won't be everyone's cup of tea, but that will still probably be a good game.
Fantastic Supreme Überkaiser Emperor Folt of The Infinity and Beyond" ... "The First"!I'll have to play it to find out if I prefer it. I will pick it up, though. It's part of a specific series of games I don't miss.
Quest 64 threadAh, so will I.
Fantastic Supreme Überkaiser Emperor Folt of The Infinity and Beyond" ... "The First"!Keep in mind that I like MP/FP etc. systems, and hey, as I said, the partners are freakin' awesome(the biggest charm to the series).
But eh.
Quest 64 threadI will miss having a Goomba as my exposition partner regarding people and places.
I just won't let that get in my way of enjoying the game if it's good.
Fantastic Supreme Überkaiser Emperor Folt of The Infinity and Beyond" ... "The First"!I'll definitely plan on checking this out. Partners or no partners, as long as it's fun and the writing is good, I'll buy it.
As for the previous entries, I felt the first Paper Mario was pretty consistently fun and funny at the same time, TTYD was even better, but SPM wasn't quite as awesome as the previous two. The gameplay was still good and I liked the platforming elements, but I thought the writing was kinda bland, mostly from Chapter 4-ish onward.

Extra 1: Poochy Ain't StupidAs for as the Paper Mario games goes, I didn't like the first Paper Mario that much in fact it my least favorite out of the three, mainly because of the battle system and the Mario vs. Bowser plot.
The second game was awesome, had great and more original storyline and improve on every flaw from the first, gameplay wise and had a better soundtrack.
The third is very underrated, imo, it had the best soundtrack and storyline out of all three, with the best villains as well.
I didn't care much for SPM's soundtrack, a bit too much looping for my taste.
Put me in motion, drink the potion, use the lotion, drain the ocean, cause commotion, fake devotion, entertain a notion, be Nova ScotianAnd a bit too... retroish? for me.
You got some dirt on you. Here's some more!I really liked the techno/retro-esque thing they were going for in TTYD's soundtrack. And with me having a soft spot for jazzy-style music, I'm most likely going to enjoy Sticker Star's soundtrack as well (Warm Fuzzy Plains' theme is starting to reach Ear Worm levels for me).

Eh.Oooh... which game has my favorite soundtrack? That's a seriously tough choice! The first game had some absolutely amazing music. Pretty much every tune in Flower Fields was awesome, even the one-off music used for the Monty Mole invasion or the Sun'a Tower. Over Shiver Mountain, too. Gusty Gulch's theme... and all those amazing boss battle themes! Huff N. Puff! The Koopa Bros.! Tutankoopa! And the Crystal King! Not to mention a great remix of Yoshi's Island. But TTYD is no slacker, either. The boss battle themes are still awesome, like Cortez's. Petal Fields has an awesome remix of the main theme. Oh man... I think I have to give it to the original, but only just.

I want the actual partners back. Not like the Pixls. They were meh to me. I enjoyed the platforming, though.
I don't know why Nintendo won't go back to the original formula. It worked, after all.
