That looks like it's AVP 1 actually.

AVP 2's Marine UI had a blue interface colour as well as boxes like so (compare to Steam's AVP Classic 2000).

[up][up][up] That's not AVP 2. That's AVP 1. It's a different game entirely.

[nja]

It gets confusing I guess. Easy mistake.

I mean, there was an Alien Vs. Predator for the Atari Jaguar. By Rebellion. In 1994.

Then in 1999/2000 there was an Alien Versus Predator for PC by Rebellion. Again. This one got re-released on Steam, as previously mentioned.

Then in 2001 there was an Alien Vs. Predator 2 for PC by Monolith.

Then in 2002 there was an Expansion Pack, Alien Vs. Predator 2 Primal Hunt by Third Law Entertainment.

Then in 2010 there was an Alien Vs. Predator by Rebellion again for PS 3, Xbox360 and PC.

EDIT: I sorta like AVP 2 and Primal Hunt a little bit better than AVP 1. But AVP 2 isn't on Steam. Apparently.

EDIT: I've played all these games. AVP 2 was my favorite. Now it's gone. Sorta upset about it.

I enjoyed A:CM, as long as I kept in mind what I was enjoying it for: killing Aliens while getting a glimpse into the narrative universe. As a game, it was mediocre at best.

I guess some of the above mentioned games have spoiled me a little, because I expected a little more than that. If only slightly.

Oh well. Glad someone got some enjoyment out of it at least.

AVP 2 is definitely my pick of the series. Great campaign for all three, and great multiplayer (though we did have to embargo the smart gun via gentlemen's agreement).

@those that mentioned AVP 2000 is actually AVP 1:

Yeah I figured as much. Had a hunch that was probably what you weren't referring to when you asked for AVP 2.

AVP 2 is pretty awesome, but its age does show in some quite obvious ways.

Wow, how long has it been since I first posted my question about ACM?

Anyway, would you guys recommend buying the 2010 Aliens vs Predator game if it comes on a Steam sale?

[up]Actually, I would. It's good, not amazing, but I enjoyed it. The game overall is kind of average, but the characters and controls all feel very right for the most part.

I think the graphical issues have been fixed now too, if I'm not mistaken. It's probably an alright buy for about $5 or so.

Well, I'll have to admit that the main reason so far that I'm contemplating buying the game is because of watching DaWarMachine's playthorugh for Alien Mission 1. Specimen 6 is just so damn smart; he has an actual justification for why he the Alien protagonist. And the whole tutorial makes a lot of sense, since he's not so much being told what to do by his human captors (barring the first bit, which still makes sense; he's almost certainly been conditioned through punishment to obey basic commands such as "follow this thing with your eyes"), but rather said humans are observing him for scientific reasons, testing him for certain reactions and behavior, and generally commenting on what he does after he does it.

And I liked the part where the game actually bothers to tell you that he gets his objectives directly from the Queen (who is persumably telepathic, as is the common fandom hypothesis), rather than leaving you wondering how the hell the Alien character can know some things that it should not be aware of or be able to draw a connection between (e.g. how would he know that he has siblings to rescue? He's been kept in isolation for a long time, and the other xenos' chamber isn't exactly close enough that he could have heard them at the time the objective came up).

I would not put A:CM anywhere near that level of depth.

For those of you still aching for something like the original premise of the game, there is a mod that completely overhauls the game's AI, gunplay, lighting, and balancing. I've never played the game or the mod myself (I heard of this through a modding discussion), but if you already own the game on PC and have the time, it could be worth a shot (the mod itself is free, of course).

Here are some videos for comparison, in addition to the ones on the mod page. There are probably more if you search for them. Somebody else will have to tell me how it compares.

Also from what I've heard, the mod makes the human enemies much easier to kill in that they die fast when you hit them in their unarmored parts. And be warned that the changed lighting and stuff may be harder on your PC than the original game.

So anybody else heard the absurd story that apparently this game's AI was bad because there was single typo?

Seriously.

Lavaeolus Since: Jan, 2015

That the alien AI was utterly borked because of one typo is something I can easily believe. What I'm curious is, did Gearbox realise the AI was broken? This isn't really that minor or subtle of a glitch. If you know how the enemies are supposed to act, there being an error should be pretty obvious.

The game's development was split between Gearbox and TimeGate, as Gearbox wanted to focus on Borderlands 2; did this lead to some confusion? TimeGate do claim to have done most of the AI, etc. If Gearbox realised the error, did they try to fix it? Were they too close to an unbudgeable release date and, having realised the game's release was doomed, did they resolve to wash their hands of it? Or was their development focus really just that lackadaisical? Perhaps they knew, and maybe the underlying cause did just really stump them?

So one of the lousiest licensed games in recent history was only lousy because of a single typo? Good lord, that sounds so unbelievable, you'd need a "Not Making This Up" Disclaimer or something.

Well, okay, so has anyone here tried this fix? Does it make the game better?

[up]It's not unbelievable at all if you know a single thing about code really.

PC Gamer has before and after footage. And Sid Alpha also shows it in his video.

The later says that it does make the Alien AI way more fun to fight, but mind you, it does nothing for the human AI, shitty story, shitty level design...

Every bug is technically a typo, for writing instructions in a language created to be read by an impossibly-technical pedant.

[up]Not really? You can have bugs due to plenty of issues not pertaining to typoes. From code incompatibility to poor scripting that fails to account for certain scenario or cannot handle certain variables.

Typo caused bugs are very common however.

@Targetmaster: Yeah as said, it does make the alien AI play cat and mouse with players as advertised, but it doesn't really fix rest of the problems with game

But at least it makes the game not to be shockingly bad I guess

Anyhoo, interestingly this was discovered 8 months ago, but only now are news website spreading news about this
