There have been many different threads about autism, and they all at some point talk about low/high functioning autism. What are the distinctions between the two, exactly?

From what I've heard (and I'll be the first to admit that I could be wrong), High functioning autistics are able to function independently, without any help or training, whereas low functioning needs more help or training to live independently.
