Ok, so I'm running osananajimi as the harem anime characer type childhood friend love interests, and I'm wondering, is this new trope here supposed to be "forgotten childhood friend" with all generic "two chaacters were friends but forgot each other", or closer to something like Forgotten Osananajimi, as an alternate plot variety of that specific love interest type?

I remember several anime with the specific plot of one of the girls turning out to be the barely remembered little girl from the character's early childhood, but no western examples of anything that specific.

Or maybe we should have different tropes for the two? tongue

Those are distinctly different tropes.

Where would that put Love Hina and Mutsumi? Keitaro specifically merged Naru who won and Mutsumi who lost into one person in his memories. Naru and Mutsumi didnt remember till much much later (Naru over time and with the help of others and Mutsumi hit her head and remembered.) I Have Gone Crosseyed...

Anyways those are two different tropes. The first one would probably be like Final Fantasy VIII and the other is the standard Ukyo type.

[up][up]Are you sure? What makes a Forgotten Osananajimi different from a western Forgotten Childhood Friend who happens to be a love interest?

The Forgotten Love Interest "who probably already had a crush on you from before" Archetype is very different than just an Childhood friend you forgot about.

[up] Are you talking about the difference betwwen love interest childood friends, and just plain childhood friends?

Because I understan that part: Unlucky Childhood Friend is already about love interests, so if the forgotten ones will be split off, it's obvious that the trope will be specifically Forgotten Childhood Friend Love Interest, but the question is, is that a universal trope, or an Japanese trope, or both of them are different Forgotten Childhood Friend Love Interest tropes.

Oh the post on the top of the page made it seem completely different. Its a universal trope I think although I cant think of a western example at the moment.

Yeah, I think the same. It sounds like it is universal, but I could name none to compare to my dozen anime examples.

It's possible that I'm just biased because I spent the past week organizing anime tropes.

But it's a bit important, as the Japan-specific Osananajimi is about to be different from the two generic childhood friend tropes.

It might be good to know which one this is a counterpart to.

I'm pretty sure that Unlucky Childhood Friend covers the osananajami. The crowner is about splitting this trope into that character type and the childhood friend that has been forgotten, such as Kotomi in Clannad.

As for western examples, there's Agnes in David Copperfield. However, that is listed under victorious childhood friend, which is a trope I don't feel should really exist. It ought to be merged into this one.

[up]It is covered, but it is supposed to be a more specific subtrope of "childhood friend" than these. Read the above linked YKTTW description, and comment, if you have any criticism about that interpretation.

Also, what about Long Lost Childhood Friend for a title of this one? It is better than Forgotten Childhood Friend, because it includes examples of characters who weren't literally forgotten, just fell out of touch with each other.

this thread also needs locking. Unlucky Childhood Friend (and Forgotten Childhood Friend) is now under a different trope name, which makes this thread rather useless.

[up] What about for discussing whether or not open-ended, mutual, and unrequited examples belong under the same trope name?
