I went to see Tron: Legacy a few days ago and can't stop chewing the movie, its characters and ideas over in my head. By itself the original didn't do anything but give me a bunch of inside jokes with my friends, but the gap of time between the two movies lends so much continuity to the setting that I can't stop myself from imagining where the story could go. It's too damned interesting to me.

Suffering from a serious case of awesomeness withdrawal, I searched the internet for more material and absorbed comics and alternate reality games. Exhausting that, I looked for fan made material, mostly in the form of fan fiction.

Tron fan fiction is awful. There's nothing out there that satiates my appetite for tron lines, hokey computer references, and characters I'd like to root for. Seeing as the sequel came out only a few days ago, I'm sure something of more quality will emerge with time.

The problem is that I'm an impatient person. I want something good, and I want something now. Since I like to think of myself as a competent writer, I feel obligated to be the one that puts that quality on the table.

I'm a firm believer that most of fan fiction is crap, but I don't want this urge to write Tron to be responsible for more disappointment. I've been brainstorming and planning to make something good, something with the flavor of the movies, but I can't bring myself to write anything unless I'm sure it can be done right.

I'm aware of the pitfalls and perils of fan fiction writing and am planning to avoid them. Beyond that though, I want to make something so cool it's awesome. Anything less isn't enough.

So let us suppose you've seen both Trons. Then let us also suppose that you like both Trons. What would make a Tron fan fiction resonate for you? I have too many ideas bouncing around inside my head to think straight. I need an outsider's input.

Bring Tron back a hero. Maybe have Alan or Lora enter the system. Or maybe take a ride into Encom, see how that system's been doing since it all went down.

Tron is shaping up to be one of the main characters of what I've got so far. Though hearing it from someone else, the idea of Encom's system being a key location, perhaps as a battleground for Sam's move to retake control of the company, is intriguing. Dillinger's son exhibited a certain expertise with computing that would carry over well into characterizing the system's modern incarnation.

I'm actually considering writing a Tron / Highlander crossover, where in the 1980s, before finally killing the Kurgan, Connor McLeod and another immortal he's fighting are sucked into the Grid. As always, Connor's the only one who can kill the other immortal, but if he kills him, then all the lightning you get from the Quickening would short out the Grid, killing everyone inside of it. Connor must work with Kevin Flynn to get the other immortal back into the real world so he can be killed safely.

... could always run those ideas past my Godmother - she wrote it.

I'm curious how much input she actually had on Legacy, though.

I heard that the ten part miniseries will focus on Kevin and Quorra during their considerable time on the Grid before Sam shows up. It'll be a good source of material once it airs.

What'll they call it, though? CLU's Clues? The Legend of Quorra?
