He seems to be a good enough director, considering he has worked as one in most other Metroid games, but if Other M is any indication, he is a terrible writer. Even if we are to accept his view of Samus (which is very differnet on how most fans view her), Samus in Other M is still badly written. She's really one-note, with her dialogue revolving entirely around Adam or "the Baby", and generally just does not come across as the kind of person who would have been exploring unknown planets and kicking Space Pirate ass for multiple games.
Basically, John Romero all over again.
I also feel that there was indeed potential in Other M's story, but the execution is what killed it.
Really, I don't mean any disrespect to him, as he is the same guy behind Wario Land, Rhythm Heaven, Tomodachi Life, Super Metroid, and Metroid Zero Mission. To call him a hack who shouldn't make another game just because of one failed project is really unfair.

While I think saying he should never make another game ever again is going too far, he really, REALLY shouldn't write stories anymore, at least not unsupervised.
I sure said that!I don't follow the blog so I don't really get all this Peko the Destructor stuff but I did laugh at
Tee hee
Forever liveblogging the Avengers...Thank you.
I do follow that blog, but I wasn't able to post that earlier.
Some more art from that tumblr that is enthusiastic about metroid.
Metroidvania.
Soft fusion.
Yeah, I dunnae.
I would be entirely unsurprised if Mother Brain started spouting Dracula's lines from Symphony of the Night
Oh really when?Metroid needs more iconic scenes.
And giving Samus Richter's VA could be considered an improvement.
..."Die contraption, you don't belong in this world. Cause I sploded you twice already and frankly I'm getting annoyed with you."
"It was not by my hand that I was once again given flesh. I was brought here by pirates that wish to pay me tribute!"
"Tribute? You steal their wills and make them your slaves!"
"Perhaps the same could be said of all leaders but-"
"No it really couldn't"
"But enough talk have at you!"
Other M is nothing that Super Metroid already wasn't, in a bad way: An argument by a person.
I don't really agree but its something I hadn't noticed as much before (there was a child ridley in Super?). Also, the reblog response rebuts are interesting as well.
Forever liveblogging the Avengers... I'm sorry, what?
No, really, what? That claim is literally based on nothing.
I sure said that!I think the issue here is Franchise Original Sin; that simply being able to see echoes of Other M in the earlier games is poisoning them for the writer.
...Not nothing, exactly. I mean, the original post does explain what that claim is based off.
Having thought about it a bit more I'm going to say that the difference between Other M and Super Metroid concerning mother themes is that Other M ascribes bad things as a result of ignoring the proper role of the mother and Super Metroid just shrugs.
In Other M, Madeline Bergman 'failed' as a mother to Melissa by passively letting the Spacetriots take her away. And then Melissa went crazy and killed everything, kickstarting the plot of the game.
In Super Metroid, Samus ditched the baby to go focus on her career (of blowing up planets) and the baby gets kidnapped. But the first fight against Ridley is a hopeless boss fight so it wouldn't have mattered whether she was there or not.
So Other M goes "YOU FAILED AS A MOTHER EVERYTHING IS FUCKED" and Super Metroid goes "hey go blow up this space dragon he's a dick"
Also, Samus was adopted by several non-romantic bird aliens. That's pretty unheteronormative, right?

Forever liveblogging the AvengersHahaha what the fuck.
...There's a mini-Ridley you fight? And a mini-Phantoon? And a mini-Mother Brain, and mini-Torizo, and mini-Gold-Torizo, and mini-Crocomire, and...
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! There's a turtle in Maridia. With babies. Attack the babies and it gets pissed.
There are Draygon babies.
There was a mini-Kraid but since Kraid is a dude he instead represents Fatherhood which is why he keeps getting left out of the series.
He just screws up the theme, y'know?
Don't you have to piss off the turtle if you want to get the upgrades in that room without coming back with Space Jump?

Forever liveblogging the AvengersWho says Kraid is male?
The original Metroid manual, the same one that called Samus a guy.
The Super Metroid manual calls Kraid an it.
And then Zero Mission manual calls Kraid a he again.
So, I guess I was just assuming. He is pretty phallic.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersIt's possible Kraid's species is hermaphroditic.
Redemptive readings. And the value thereof.
I never really assumed Fake Kraid was a baby but now that I think about it I'm not sure what else it could be. Though since it didn't return in Zero Mission I guess it was a fake out to build up the "Kraid is big now suckas" reveal (the secret was already out by ZM, so it lost its purpose), instead of any comment on motherhood.
I agree that Draygon is absolutely mother imagery, though I never saw the babies carrying off the corpse as a "No Samus, you are the real monsters" moment because I was too busy thinking "those babies are totally gonna eat that corpse", though I admit this may be a personal problem.
Oh dear. If anyone needs me, I'm going to be in my nuclear fallout bunker.
