Yep, pretty much. I don't have a lot of experience with fighting games, but I did play quite a bit of Super Street Fighter 4 on the 3DS (before the 3DS version getting screwed out of essential balance patches made me quit). I managed to get somewhere close to the higher-levels of play, but that was mostly because I was so dedicated to seeing what all the fuzz was about regarding fighting games. Also, because it was the only game I had for the 3DS for a rather long time.

While there was a training mode where the game would challenge you to perform a good bunch of combos, it never teaches you about actual tactics, or even gameplay mechanics. I had to learn mostly from online guides and youtube videos before I could even get started on actually playing the game.

That kind of stuff might fly in the Arcade era, but it really doesn't work any more for the modern age, especially since apparently the only way for fighting games to innovate is to make things even more complex than it used to be. Yeah, that's great for die-hard fans, but what about the rest of the potential audience?

That's probably why it's such a big idea to remember the newcomers. I recently played a bit of Persona 4 Arena and I'm mostly there for the story, as quite a few of the people who follow the main series would be. Now Arena 2 does seem to be bringing in a leveling system with social links and such to blend in some more RPG elements into the game. But the other fact of the matter is that it's on a console I don't own.

I guess this means I should be keeping a closer eye on Smash Bros but I'm more a hyped for Pokemon and Persona Q.

They recommended Perfect Imbalance twice in the same week.

Which is fine, because it's one of my favorite episodes. Easily the episode I come back to the most.

-hugs Vita tightly- I still love you.

Honestly, it seems like Nintendo can only pull the internal support trick. For any and all things that are interesting are on the 3DS are the first-party games. Because taking a look at next months releases and there is nothing except One Piece thing and shovelware that's typical of handhelds. Meanwhile, the Vita at least has a wonderful digital offering of indies and, while it isn't supported well in the West, Japan has grown to like it as the other handheld device and so we get strange Japanese things as well. Also of note is that if Sony supports the system, it's mostly through Japan Studio, their Japanese game studio now.

Also, I have all Persona games on it. Barring Arena. And all dubbed Anime episodes. Also currently. Not to mention that Danganronpa is currently my GOTY and I am a hyped for the sequel.

[up]Yeah, no, I got plenty great exclusive third-party games on my (3)DS. The Vita, meanwhile, seems to be mostly stuck with console ports from where I'm standing.

So in short, it's a stellar system, but a floptastic marketing strategy?

This might be more of a YMMV for what constitutes "interesting". I'm pretty sure Nintendo doesn't own Level-5 or Atlus, and they make great games for the 3DS. Plus it has Rune Factory 4. (Anybody? No? Just me?)

But that's a story for another time.

Yet again an episode of Extra Credits that I really can't disagree with. I mean, Early Access games are already on my list of "do not touch, ever", but I never quite thought about the larger picture like this. I mostly thought about how I'm expected to pay full price for something that might never be actually finished, or may be unable to live up to the promises made.

Really, many artist are very peculiar about not wanting to show their work until it has been finished and perfected, because they don't want people to judge the work in it's half-finished state. Game developers might do better if they adopted that line of thinking.

But of course, that's where we get into the matter of funds. Perhaps the industry needs something of an "indie label". A publisher that invests specifically in small-yet-interesting titles.

I'd say not touching them ever might be a bad idea, Minecraft was example of early access game before they became a thing tongue There ARE ones in good enough state to play and enjoy them in same manner as Terraria or Binding of Isaac updates. Like, game already feels fun enough, but updates feel like playing those two games when devs were still updating them

Thing is, some games work as a collection of content and systems and some games need to be a whole in order to get their point across.

Minecraft worked as an early access game because it's so wide open. Building is the core of the game, and other systems merely add to building, rather than being an intimate part of it. Really, the point where Minecraft was "officially released" was kind of arbitrary. It's still being update and changed just as much as it was before.

Halo as an early access game would be awful. The game relies on polish, balance, pacing, and all of those other things that require the game being complete.

Ya, but thats why I said not touching any game just because it has label is bad idea by itself tongue Since it DOES work in certain situations

Huh, I just bought Portal and Portal 2 during the Summer Steam Sale. I'm just nodding my head as I watch the video.

Aw, man. I didn't get Portal (or Portal 2) because I'd already watched a couple LP's of it, and figured I'd already spoiled myself on the puzzles. sad
