Just saw this neat article: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704694004576019691769574496.html

Basically, people who carry iPhones/Android phones everywhere are now comparing prices directly in stores, and then not buying what's right in front of them, but instead buying it from whoever has the lowest price. While definitely awesome in the short term for those who of us who "beat the system", it will probably hurt a lot of businesses that are unable to find ways to slash prices and Wal-Mart it up. What do you think?

Still, store chains are increasingly concerned about the ability of mobile-equipped shoppers to tilt the balance of power in retailing toward consumers
They say this as if that was a bad thing.

Anyway, I'm not gonna fall for the "it hurts buisness" guilt trip, and you shouldn't either. Stores have competed with online stores (and each other) for quite a while now and it doesn't look like they are going to die. People who compare prices like hell are also not new.

It depends what they are selling and the immediacy of it.

I was thinking about this a few days back and realised that although shopping online for some things is useful, some things are easier to buy in person (clothing in particular).

Welcome to the global economy, retailers. There is no going backwards. Adapt or die.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

I find it funny that Best Buy is mentioned multiple times as an example of a store that charges a lot more than competitors. They really do have a bad reputation.

I'm waiting for a general app for this. My phone isn't one of the smart ones though. I'm picturing one where you press the bar code up to the camera and it does everything for you. I'd say that fresh food is still something people will shop in a brick and mortar store for regardless. I don't want bruised food and am willing to put time and effort into avoiding it.

Fight smart, not fair.

When I told the computer store round the block from me that I would search for a product online before buying it, they implied that I was looking for a better price. I explained that I'd rather get it today but was going to search for complaints about it first, to check that it was what I wanted. They approved.
