Before you post in this thread, I recommend that you lisiten to this. It's the good stuff.

Anyway, This a writing exercise were we find stuff in our work that is a blend of:

  • The familiar, somthing that is a common trope or idea and not a twist on it's own,(like Giant Robots)...

  • ...and the original (The robot is a mile or so tall, but cannot stand under it's own weight without help and thus is confined to the deep depths of the sea).

You can make a concept up on the spot if you wish, and critique on the originality/non-originality of your work would be appciated.

Hello and thanks for the link! You might want to fix it so it has double brackets like this:

[[http://www.writingexcuses.com/2008/02/17/writing-excuses-episode-2-blending-the-familiar-and-the-original/ this]]

so that it would look like this:

I think I'll post one of my own blends when my mind is working.

Has ADD, plays World of Tanks, thinks up crazy ideas like children making spaceships for Hitler. Occasionally writes them down.

One of my favorite expressions of this concept is a Captain Ersatz.

Take, for instance, Supreme. Supreme is basically Superman (familiar), but everything is twisted slightly to give it a fresh edge (original).

Grr. Argh.
