I'm not much of a mythology buff, but I don't think fertility goddesses were necessarily 'hot' until Demeter.

Good point. So did Ancient Japan get on the whole bandwagon of "fertility goddess as a balloon float, potentially covered with dozens of saggy breasts?"

(puts mind on leash before it goes places I don't want it to regarding one of my favorite characters)

Eh, I dunno. For some reason, the idea of Suwako being the "man behind the man" of the shrine seems kinda off to me. Although I can totally see her going up to Kanako and going "it would be cool if we did X, so we should totally do it." Whether or not Kanako does it depends on how practical it would be/how "not insane" the idea is. And sometimes, she just skips the Kanako stage, because Kanako is an old coot who would never understand the awesomeness of the shrine having a robot.

Yeah, Man Behind the Man is probably going a bit too far - that sounds awfully like work. It's probably more like Suwako is content to let Kanako be the schemer, but she knows her partner well enough to "steer" her a bit.

I've gotta say I'm not particularly fond of that, since it seems to me to stem from the general sentiment that Suwako is all that and a bag of cheese and Kanako is an old hag.

Look, if Kanako wants to be taken seriously, she needs a hat. Otherwise no matter how many pillars and rope rings she tosses around, she'll still look poor and Irish. But yeah, I shouldn't emphasize one part of the Moriya partnership too much - Suwako's pretty much a slacker, if a loveable one. It's Kanako who's holding the place together, doing all the hard stuff.

Also, I like the idea of Suwako appreciating technology, and wanting the shrine to get ahead of the competition by using it. (although I personally feel Kanako shares those sentiments nowadays, but this might just be Suwako rubbing off on her)

I think Suwako's interest in it is a result of her history and appreciation of giant robots, while to Kanako technology is just a way of improving one's life through sci... er. More specifically, Kanako uses technology to get what she wants, but she doesn't play favorites with it - it's one of many options she could use to get from Point A to Point B. She's probably the more flexible thinker, whereas Suwako is in danger of falling prey to When All You Have Is A Giant Death Robot.

There's the rather amusing theory that of the three Moriya Shrine characters, Suwako's the only one with any experience with men.

Snake Eats Frog

(flashbacks to EWI Venerable Swimsuits Battlefield)

If Kanako had lost the Great Suwa War.

Apparently Snake-Eyed Kanako gets her own character tag. I think the comic that introduced her had her as some sort of orphan/prisoner until Stern Adult Suwako took her under her care. Which would certainly add an interesting dynamic to the Great Suwa War.

"Though the Wind Cries" Suwako-Rapey Situation

Yeah, if raping is involved and the gods aren't the ones doing it, I'm afraid you've broken my suspension of disbelief.

Actually. I think it was the other way around. It was while suwako was still the goddess of that region, and the man was angry because his sister had been offered as a sacrifice. Suwako easily defeated and wounded him and then raped him for a reason that I can't exactly recall. I think it was for the purpose of bearing Sanae's ancestor.

That's more like it! ...Wait, that's still horrible. But it's a horribleness that's more believable than the alternative. So that makes it... better?

As for the frogs, isn't it reasonable to assume that she simply is froggy by nature? Somehow? I don't know how this godly stuff works.

Possible. Though Kanako specifically adopted a snake them after defeating Suwako, meaning that she could have been a more generic goddess beforehand, so there's no reason Suwako couldn't have done the same. Though maybe she started out as a frog-deity... hmm, Small God Suwako, the never-before-told origin story...

It just occured to me that i have never been able to not see Kanako and Suwako as a married couple.

They've been in a domestic partnership for over two thousand years, bicker and argue all the time while still remaining the best of friends, and have provided guidance to their spiritual "children" for generations. They transcend marriage.

The Mature God

Succinct, but you pretty much nai... Pretty much accurately described Suwako there. She's probably one of the best-adjusted and angst-free Touhou characters, and you explained why.

Yeah, you could've sweated out a two-page minific hoping to achieve the same through Show, Don't Tell, but sometimes it's not worth the time and effort when you can so easily just Tell us about your view of the character.

Which is not meant to deride anyone who prefer to express their opinions through minifics. Just expressing my opinion that fic and non-fic interpretations are equally valid, and you shouldn't feel obligated to use one over the other.

So how about them NSFW picdumps? Firefox is doing this thing where it sometimes cuts off the "http" parts from the address bar, so they're getting more difficult.

The Mature God
Hmm, not bad. It would help the flow if you broke it up into paragraphs, to make it easier on the eyes and divide it into thought units and stuff. But the thoughts you had are good.

Suwako enjoys the little things because she knows that she is one of them in the greater scheme.
I particularly like this line.

If I were a translator, I'd probably use something like "auspicious".
I like "sunny". It fits into her themes, and is evocative even without the cultural background (which I have to admit I didn't know about before).

It just occured to me that i have never been able to not see Kanako and Suwako as a married couple.
I tried and tried, but I couldn't find the comic I was looking for.

So instead, have this. Because snake-eyed Kanako is the cutest thing.

The "married couple" idea fascinates me, but I see them more as "roommates", so to speak. Of course, they act like parents to Sanae of course! (With Kanako being the strict/perfectionist, but loving, mom
And while we're at it.

As for...that. I always assumed Suwako could change forms whenever she wanted to. I don't really think about it.
If gods can manifest in many places at the same time, it stands to reason they can manipulate what they manifest as, yeah.

Look, if Kanako wants to be taken seriously, she needs a hat. Otherwise no matter how many pillars and rope rings she tosses around, she'll still look poor and Irish.
Wha-

Yeah, if raping is involved and the gods aren't the ones doing it, I'm afraid you've broken my suspension of disbelief.
To be fair, she was at the end of her powers at the time. Though the comic also gave some sort of explanation about how her weakness made her more "real" and thus made it even possible for the guy to interact with her... I admit, that makes it sound like they just wanted an excuse for some drama.

That's more like it! ...Wait, that's still horrible. But it's a horribleness that's more believable than the alternative. So that makes it... better?
I actually find that less believable because why the hell would she even do that.

They've been in a domestic partnership for over two thousand years, bicker and argue all the time while still remaining the best of friends, and have provided guidance to their spiritual "children" for generations. They transcend marriage.
Goddammit where is that comic I want to find!

Yeah, you could've sweated out a two-page minific hoping to achieve the same through Show, Don't Tell, but sometimes it's not worth the time and effort when you can so easily just Tell us about your view of the character.
Yes. It's all about the quality of the thoughts. Then you just have to figure out the best format to present them.

Serious
You mean "twenty year-old bombshell"?

I love that picture. I can hardly imagine a better way to increase her apparent age while retaining her Suwakoness.

The gods view the world differently than we mortals
Ooh. I wouldn't have thought of it like that just from seeing the picture myself. That's interesting to think about. If they can manifest in any place they want, and many places at the same time... that means their conscious is pretty much everywhere, doesn't it?

That aside, the picture reminded me of another gorgeous adult Suwako by the same artist.

This is pretty old
But classic. A very Suwako-like picture. If we weren't supposed to aim for a uniform style, I'd use that for our character sheet on the wiki.

This isn't, though
Augh, but that is extremely Suwako-like in its own way, too. This is hard!

What're they getting into?
A wondrous adventure, of course~

Holy crap they have noses.

Dammit, Tacitus. Each time you make a picdump lately, my avatar gallery size increases by like 20%!

I have no clue what that means.

So Suwako. She creates earth. So, does this mean she just summons rocks, or can she create flat out land, with life (or at least able to easily sustain it) and everything? She'd make for a nice creator deity I think.

Because of Hisoutensoku, it's pretty clear she can manipulate anything that grows out of the earth, as well as the earth itself.

She punches people with sudden trees out of nowhere

Her power is creation, not merely summoning. The same kind of word you'd use for a creator god. What she actually creates is "kon" one of the 8 trigrams of the I Ching, which represents, among other things, Yin, Earth and the direction of Southwest. It's not an everyday word. For reference, Kanako creates "ken" which represents Yang, Heaven and Northwest. Anyway, to me it sounds like she creates dirt. Other trigrams would represent mountains or lakes, so she doesn't create those. What do you know, more Taoism.

If you look at her Hisoutensoku fighting style though, it involves trees quickly growing out of the ground in offensive ways.

Great, even the Shinto gods are in on the Taoist conspiracy.tongue

Of course, some of that matches up with Kanako/Suwako very well. (Such as father and mother, though that may just be the fanon talking. I think Kanako would fit "strong" and Suwako "devoted" as well) others, not so much (Suwako's animal is frog, not cow). Eh. Maybe I am just over thinking it/being silly. It is probably not supposes to fully match up.

I do find it odd that "earth" is separate from "mountain" though. Reminds me of what someone said earlier about Suwako and Kanako setting up shop on Youkai Mountain though (Earth meets Heaven at the Mountain, and all)

A more worrisome question would be whether or not that guy represents your Japanese counterpart, implying that you may have an inherent inclination towards school swimsuits.

I actually find that less believable because why the hell would she even do that.

I know, right? For all we know she had a priestess of Ishtar thing set up.... though she's the goddess, not the priestess, and the secular authority at the same time, so... well, she obviously worked something out.
