The reason the midbosses in ESOD get less is probably because they don't have names. And they don't have names due to a quirk in game mechanics. In PCB and beyond all bosses have the names written next to their lifebar. So otherwise meaningless bosses like Lily White and Tewi get names, and when they get names they get brief profiles. Because it'd be kind of weird to name someone and then not describe them at all.

Tewi is also paired with someone popular (Namely Reisen "Useless Bunny Only Good For Her Sex Appeal" Udongein Inaba (And no, I recognise her as a character, I did play IN before encounting that particular meme))

And now, actual Tacitus picdump.

Simple, but I like it
Dwaaaaaaaaaaaah! Haawwwwww! That's how you do chibi artwork!

Icicle aura
Aah, a more subtle Ex-Boss Cirno design? Very pretty.

Lookin' Japanese here
Hmm, she's wearing a kimono, but she doesn't look too Japanese herself. She kind of does in this picture. Which I'm quite fond of because, somehow, I think she looks very intelligent in it.

Her control has improved
She's a waterbender! (Pretty!)

The adventure begins
Ooh. This is the first one that really caught my attention. Not much for Cirno herself, but I guess a person is just as well characterized by their environment, right?

Aged-up
Gee, I hope that's not what she'll look like as an adult. Seems like her arrogance took over.

... Hmm. While I've got a crapton of new pictures out of this and I still won't be able to decide on an avatar, I feel like a lot of those pictures had big problems, and that there are some important pictures that didn't make it... I'm afraid I just might have to browse my picture collection to find them!

... it's only like 8870 files.

easy

Huh? I counted Momiji amongst the no-dialogue midbosses that have backstory and spellcards.
... Huh. I guess I must've misunderstood you and you were actually trying to say the exact opposite of what I thought. I guess. Maybe.

Tewi is also paired with someone popular (Namely Reisen "Useless Bunny Only Good For Her Sex Appeal" Udongein Inaba (And no, I recognise her as a character, I did play IN before encounting that particular meme))
Tewi is also several times more important and notable than Reisen, really.

Why did Elly push Yuuka out of the way, though? Doesn't seem that dangerous to her. If at all.
Elly pushed Yuuka out of the way because Cirno's freezing of the Master Spark would have frozen her (and Daiyousei) as well, since they were currently standing in what was the Spark's path when it was shot. Cirno didn't know this, of course. I hope that makes sense. If that doesn't make sense, then the "hardness" of the sudden frozen spark would have at least shoved them off the arena.

As for Yuuka being agile, I assumed, with her being physically strong, she could run/jump/etc fast, but flies slower since flying is more "magic based" for nonwinged creatures. Honestly though, I forgot about the "slow Yuuka" thing, so that is why this explanation might not gel with the story.

Anyway, Cirno and Daiyousei. Cool fairies.*

We're talking about Cirno with a slight subtopic of Daiyousei who has a big heart but not a big role in the series.

A Pure Wind

Daiyousei was troubled. It had been nearly six months since she and Cirno had met a trio of new friends, and one of them, the Night Sparrow, Mystia Lorelei, told everyone that it might be a good idea for everyone to contribute something towards making their secret headquarters (A cave in a mountain adjacent to Youkai Mountain, where Mystia kept her lamprey cart and supplies), and try to make it a second home for all involved.

"And if we keep it a surprise, we can make a party out of it~!"

"But what can I do?..."

Daiyousei quietly whispered to herself, before dwelling on her thoughts-

Wriggle's told me that she made her clothes out of spiderweb, so maybe she'll make something out of thread...

Mystia's voice is really, really pretty... Maybe she'll make a stage for her to sing on...

Rumia... Has a lot of heart. She could be drawing a picture...

Cirno's so strong... She'll probably do something really big!

So what do I do?

Daiyousei wandered through the Forest of Magic, looking for something, ANYTHING, that she could donate to her friends.

After several hours, she found a large clump of dirt.

Ordinarily, she would have just passed it by, but, out of desperation, she focused a strong wind on this lump of soil.

There was nothing inside of it.

Except for a new idea.

Daiyousei rapidly took to the sky and shot of towards Youkai Mountain, landing about three miles from the secret hideout. She closed her eyes and focused-

I really hope this works...

"-And that's how I found out how red ground cherries are! And those're why I drew this picture!"

Rumia held a crudely drawn crayon picture over her head, of five indeterminate figures holding hands. They were each colored a different hue, and all had some odd aspect or another that made it clear it was an image of the group of friends sitting at the table in the supply cave.

The other four clapped, and the fairies cheered, Mystia smiling sweetly.

Wriggle looked at it a bit oddly, but still needed to ask-

"It's... It's very... Very good, Rumia. But I need to ask; what does it have to do with ground cherries?"

"They're the same color as my ribbon! So I drew it first!"

Rumia beamed with incredible pride.

"...Okay then! I guess I'll go next, then!"

Wriggle stammered this out before walking to where Rumia had been standing, the Youkai of the Darkness having already seated herself. The King of All Insects produced a lengthy banner of some kind of cloth, it being marked with several symbols.

"I had my spider friends help me with making this. Weird part is, when I sent out my signal, some girl in brown came by too. But then she left... Anyway! I thought we could use a logo for inside, so I worked an icicle, a feather, a wind swirl and a light inside of a ball of darkness! We could hang it on the wall later, right?"

Again, there were claps and cheers, and Rumia just knew it was the greatest thing ever!

"Well, I guess I'll go now..."

Mystia walked carefully towards the back of the cave, returning with several brightly colored objects.

"I bought these from that weird little shop on the edge of the forest. The clerk said that these were "electric lamps," and told me that, if we move these switches-"

Mystia did as such, causing the cavern to light up in a very deep purple.

"... That'll happen."

"Oh, cool!"

Cirno's eyes twinkled with wonder.

"AH!!"

And Rumia ducked under the table.

"Oh-oh-oh, my turn, my turn!"

Cirno ran as fast as her legs could carry her.

"Alright! So I made... This!"

The ice fairy hoisted a tiny stone tablet over her head, clearly depicting the five in an action pose, Cirno herself at the center.

"It was a lot harder to make than an ice tablet, but I wanted this to last forever."

"Oh, that's really neat, Cirno!"

Mystia smiled her sweet smile, Wriggle and Rumia looking in fascination.

"Well, that just leaves you, Daiyousei~."

Mystia looked towards the wind fairy, who slowly walked towards the spot everyone else had stood.

"Umm... I had a lot of trouble coming up with something that could compare to what all of you could do, but I hope this will be okay..."

Daiyousei produced a piece of agate, layered in all sorts of colors.

"I found this in the rocks of this mountain. I, uhmm, I hope this is good enough..."

The other four friends all started clapping, even standing up, before all of them threw themselves into a group hug, laughing with some of the best friends they'd ever had.

Daiyousei being shy makes too much sense.

I'm still trying to figure out a clear concept of Daiyousei. On the one hand, I really like the idea of her as a neighbor/buddy/foil for Cirno. It's cute, it works well. But it leaves Daiyousei as a satellite character to someone else; then again, not all of us are so lucky to be the heroes of the story, so serving a major supporting role in someone else's legend isn't too bad.

The other idea is to take Daiyousei's name as a job description: the great fairy, the leader of all fairykind, someone to appear out of a grotto fountain with a shrieking, terrifying laugh and bestow grand magical powers upon any pint-sized heroes who happen to wander by. Obstacles to this is the well-ingrained perception of Daiyousei as someone Cirno's age, and the facts that fairy society is roughly on par with that of an elementary school playground sans supervising teachers. What would fairies do with a great fairy? Why would they need one?

Maybe it's a tough, thankless job, acting as... well, "mother" would probably be hard to pull off, so let's go with "big sis." The big sis to a multitude of chattering, easily-distrcted, over-excitable, danmaku-happy hellions. Is Daiyousei the closest the fairies have to a schoolmarm? Is she the one who settles disputes over territory and pranks that've gone too far? Does she help teenie tiny "newborn" fairies find their places in the world? If she is this, the most mature and thoughtful of the fairies, does she still maintain the facade of an ordinary, childish sprite just to fool the biggers? And what would having this position of authority do to her relationship with Cirno? Is the ice fairy another of her charges, an equal, or an outlier that falls outside the normal fairy power structure?

...And what's "Lunate Elf" mean? She's got a connection to the moon? And she has green hair, so is she Mima now? Isn't there something slightly incongruous about a fairy throwing kunai?

(NSFW) Daiyousei picdump no jutsu!

Another search hampered by poor tagging. Oh, and, uh, there's this: an age-up that, while not explicit, is more NSFW than the other stuff and pushes the boundaries of "tasteful," but I like her expression in it, and the art is arguably of decent quality for what it is, which is a picture designed to titillate the viewer.

There are more pics of Daiyousei holding a gun than you'd expect.

And forever I remain circling over this thread like a ghost tied to an impossible task.

A Pure Wind
That was cute, Pulse, but why do I find this Daiyousei story more memorable for its Rumia?

I'm still trying to figure out a clear concept of Daiyousei. On the one hand, I really like the idea of her as a neighbor/buddy/foil for Cirno. It's cute, it works well. But it leaves Daiyousei as a satellite character to someone else; then again, not all of us are so lucky to be the heroes of the story, so serving a major supporting role in someone else's legend isn't too bad.

I don't think it's a bad thing at all for a character to be a satellite character, per se. Though of course, excepting certain freak cases, a character can't be completely and utterly tied to another and has to be able to stand on their own, too...

Bewitching Kaiseki is a collection of short stories about various minor characters. One of them is about Daiyousei, and does a commendable job piecing a story out of everything we know about Daiyousei, including a certain lack of knowledge and the discrepancy between the Daiyousei we know and the Daiyousei that Daiyousei is supposed to be.

I do like this idea.

I don't think the fairies need a superior, but it could just be their simple "Power Equals Authority" instincts. Which don't count for Cirno in the same way, because Cirno is powerful due to being a freak of nature, rather than being born as a Greater Fairy. As a true Greater Fairy, Daiyousei is also bigger than the others... or maybe she has special Greater Fairy wings? Something about her puts her higher on the hierarchy.

What this means for Daiyousei... well, I guess it mostly means that she receives about as much respect from the random fairies as they can muster. It might be that she sometimes has to settle disputes or otherwise act in a moderating position, being probably the most sensible one around.

First point: Aww.

Second: I don't think it'd be a facade. More mature and sensible and powerful aside, she's still a fairy child and will try to spend her time playing around whenever she's not preoccupied with anything else.

Third: I'm losing track of where I heard this, but apparently Cirno really is a special case (or "freak of nature", as I said before) who by all means should be one of the small fairies derping about with the rest, but somehow she just doesn't work that way. Maybe she fell on her head at some point and something broke. In a good way?

...And what's "Lunate Elf" mean? She's got a connection to the moon? And she has green hair, so is she Mima now? Isn't there something slightly incongruous about a fairy throwing kunai?
I have no idea why her throwing kunai makes as much sense to me as it does.

For what its worth, I highly recommend Bewitching Kaiseki to anyone who hasn't read it.

And I think if we go by size and power, all the named fairies are "great fairies." Why is Daiyousei The Great Fairy? Don't know. There might be a story there but most likely ZUN just wanted a midboss. He's come a long way from EOSD to TD where a midboss can have a fleshed out backstory.

About Cirno being a kind of freak of nature: that's a thing I'm ruminating on and if all goes well do a write-up on.

The nature of fairies interests me. Whilst most are weak and stupid, there are a few who are actually pretty dangerous.

Apart from Cirno, there's Lily White the constant vernal menace, as well as the Fairies of Light, who are pretty nasty fighters, if Fairy Wars is anything to go by.

The Fairies of Light prefer not to fight. They are basically sneak thieves. They can fight though. Its just not their usual MO.

Also, PMISS says that most individual fairies could be easily beaten by the average human and prefer to just run if they're spotted. The exception is when they're congregating near a powerful youkai, of course.

The truth is that while fairies are reckless, they don't like fighting much at all.

And that's what makes Cirno special. The Fairies of Light prefer to solid snake it. Lily White only attacks people because she's over-excited and doesn't notice them. We don't know anything about Daiyousei so I'll go ahead and leap to the conclusion that like other fairies, she only gets into a fighting mood when around hanging around someone strong. Cirno will go out and pick fights with humans or youkai or whatever. She'll kick main characters in the face, survive nuclear reactors and deliberately look for a giant youkai to beat up. She's the un-fairy like fairy. She's the strongest.
