—-The library beneath the Scarlet Devil Mansion.
Here it is cool in the summer, warm in the winter, and always comfortable.
Here, where the sunlight never reaches, the books are perfectly preserved.

From 12.3. Emphasis mine. Nothing spoiled because nothing is spoiled.

[up] Indeed.

@Otherarrow: In Touhou vampire mythology, a vampire has to drain a person of blood to turn them. Remilia can't do this because she's a light eater. She's the vampiric equivalent of sterile. And that's where baby vampires come from. Except instead of baby vampires, I mean people turned into vampires. Although babies have less blood and would be easier to drain.

The mansion is said not to have many windows.

I imagine the windows all being on either the north or south side of the building, with none to the east or west.

If Remilia is 500 years old, then so is the mansion. Therefore it could've been built in a time when windows were viewed as an extra place where arrows could be shot in. Or as expensive extras, like swimming pools in the here and now.

The mansion also has at least one balcony where Remilia's fought at the end of Eo SD. Also, congrats on nabbing the 6,000th post, Pulse.

The mansion has a giant underground library. It's clearly at least been modified to fit it's current occupants

If, as postulated earlier, she inherited it from Percival and Mathilde Scarlet, then it's even older then she is. It's entirely within the bounds of probability that Remilia's altered it over the years, possibly to keep up with the current mansion trends.

Mathilde was my suggestion for the name of Sir Percival Scarlet's wife. No-one came up with an alternative, so I called her Mathilde above.

I think someone suggested Elisabeth with an s.

Anyway, Scarlet Devil Mansion. That name ranks right up there with Don'tgonearthe Castle in terms of schmuck bait.

So then does drinking human blood have a sort of "Fountain of Youth" effect that makes you look like an eight-year-old child?

Elisabeth was also my idea.

I briefly considered Melisande, but I felt that that was going to far.

[up] Vampires don't age from the age from the day that they are turned? I think that's a fairly common vampire thing.

Immortality through vampirism: not always as great as it initially sounds.

That's often the case in other settings, but the Scarlets have a very specific "their immortality makes them children" conceit.

Well, even a big man vampire might have trouble with draining all the blood in a full grown human's body. So they drain someone smaller than them. And so on until you get to Remilia who can't make any more vampires because she just doesn't have the stomach.

[up][up] Do they have to drink the blood, or just drain it? Because otherwise that problem can be solved with the use of buckets.*

Humans have like eight pints of blood. That's a lot to drink in one sitting. And now I have an image of a vampire drinking some blood and then holding a bucket under the wound. 'D'you mind holding this bucket here? I'm just taking some for a snack later'. The vampire equivalent of taking some birthday cake home at the end of the party.

Considering that Sakuya bakes blood into their daily meals, I assume they just need to ingest it.

I think Remilia offers to turn Sakuya into a vampire at one point.

ON TOPIC: The mansion. It is, amongst other things, bright red. It has red walls, and red tinted glass in the windows. The gatekeeper and the assistant librarian have red hair. The owner's sister wears a red dress. The owner and the head maid have red eyes. I'm sensing a pattern here.

EDIT: Excuse my derp. Remilia asks if Sakuya wants to be a Hourai immortal.

And now...

The Standard Guest's Tour
"Good day to you. My name is Sakuya Izayoi, and today, I will be taking you on a tour of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, on Milady's request. Shall we begin?"

"These are the gardens on the grounds, where we grow tea bushes and the various herbs Miss Knowledge uses for magic, and that I use for cooking. Over there, you can see the flower gardens, with our famous red roses, though Meiling grows and maintains all kinds of flowers. Nestled between the two gardens, one can find, of course, the gate you passed through, and our talented Gate Guard and Gardener, Miss Hong Meiling. The doors are open; shall we head inside?"

"This, is the foyer. That's "fo-yea" not "fo-yer." To your left, you may find the kitchens, filled out with a Western, Cantonese, and Japanese layout, all used according to Milady's whims. To your left, you will spot the doorway to the basement, containing both the Young Mistress' sleeping quarters, and the Library, er, I mean, Voile. I would show you around, but Voile is nearly as big as the rest of the house, and I fear you may get lost. Hopefully, we will be able to meet Miss Flandre, Miss Knowledge, and Miss Koakuma elsewhere."

"If you head up the stairs, on the second floor, you will find the sleeping quarters of myself, Miss Meiling, and the innumerable fairy maids*

, as well as the Scarlet Family Museum. Shall we go on a brief tour?"

"The Scarlet Family's history began with a noble warrior of the Frozen North, winner of the weapons of gods. He lived for many years, before passing the weapons down to his son. The boy was far from strong enough to touch the weapons, however, and so he was changed by them; he grew wings, fangs, and a reliance on the blood of humans. However, he also became incredibly powerful, both physically and magically. It was not long, however, before even he could not stand up to the constant attacks on his home, for the villagers feared his visage. He traveled to France, of course, and took the name "Percival Scarlet" in hopes of blending in. Of course, he found a way to make money off of his talents, and came to be very wealthy, eventually building this very house. He eventually found the woman of his dreams, and revealed his true nature to her. She still loved him, and he made her as he was. They beget two daughters in five years' time, both human on birth, and they lived happily, until the first daughter's twelfth birthday; they went to one of Paris's finest restaurants, and enjoyed a fine meal. However, the cook had been told to not add garlic to one dish that the girls shared, but the parents had ordered the same thing, forgetting to bring the problem up. Upon consuming the food, they both became very weak, and died soon after. Before they did, however, they transformed the girls into creatures like themselves, leaving them forever young. The girls returned home, and found themselves alone."

"Well, after that, there's only one floor left that I may take you to; If you would follow me up his glass elevator... This is the tenth floor, containing Milady's bedroom, tearoom, and her personal library, much smaller than Voile. Ah, look at that! It seems we have arrived just in time for evening tea. If you would kindly take the seat between the Young Mistress and Miss Koakuma..."

Welcome to the Scarlet Devil Mansion, and all that.

One doujin has Remilia state that she and Flan were born as vampires...then tells a story to Patchouli of how Flan was born from a witch (who looked strangely like Patchouli) who was hung at the gallows rope. Then again Remi probably is an Unreliable Narrator and was just making shit up.

That awkward moment where Kyoro is one of Satan's Generals.

Nice to see that 'Percival Scarlet' is catching on. Not 'Sir Percival', though?*

I am disappointed that they didn't visit the opera house.
